AIR FORCE HERCULES CONDUCTS AUSTRALIA DAY FLYPAST OF DARWIN
An Air Force workhorse will appear at an Australia Day ceremony in Darwin on Tuesday 26 January 2016.
A C-130J Hercules transport aircraft will make two flypasts of Darwin War Memorial Cenotaph between 12:00pm and 12.15pm, coinciding with a 21-Gun Salute that will be taking place on the Esplanade.
The aircraft will approach from the North East to the Southwest, flying over the CBD at an altitude of 150 metres.
Following the first flypast, the Hercules will then turn over Port Darwin, and flyover from Southeast to Northwest at an altitude of 75 metres, paralleling the Esplanade.
This activity is subject to variables including aircraft availability, air traffic control, and weather. It may be subject to delay or cancellation with short notice.
Air Force operates a fleet of 12 C-130J Hercules from RAAF Base Richmond in Sydney’s North West, however the aircraft’s role as a medium tactical transport takes it all over Australia and around the globe.
The C-130J was introduced to RAAF service in 1999 and is a common sight around Darwin, however older variants of the Hercules have been operated by the RAAF since 1958.
For more than half a century, the RAAF has employed Hercules on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, including the response to Cyclone Tracy in December 1974.
The aircraft is also a key part of supporting Australian Defence Force personnel abroad, with a continuous deployment of Hercules having been operated from the Middle East Region since 2003.
Council continues to support our Financial Assistance Program because it directly benefits local community groups who would not normally qualify for any government assistance.
This year we are distributed $84,689 across 78 projects throughout our community.
Projects range from recreational activities, painting classes, theatre productions and dance and music therapy, to cultural and teaching children environmentally sustainable practices, mental health support groups, support for people with disabilities, and arts programs.
The projects reflect the diversity of community life in our City and support a wide range of issues of concern to Council and our residents.
They are also a sign that as a community, we are working together to ensure that for many people our City of Canterbury is truly a great place to live and work.

The Community Assistance and Resources for Seniors (CARS) project, under the auspices of Saint Paul Economic Development, Inc, goal is to provide prevention and early intervention services to older adults before possible life challenges escalate to suicidal thoughts. CARS will include the prevention and early identification of depression, dementia, substance abuse and suicidal tendencies and other mental health issues due to the aging process, trauma and/or bereavement. Services will be provided in a community-based setting, and in the homes for frail or geographically/socially isolated elders. CARS is located on the campus of Saint Paul AME Church at West Palm Beach, Florida.
Statistics indicate that the suicide rate among elderly people is higher than or just as high as younger people. However, this population segment is greatly overlooked. The World Health Organization in 2002 estimated that rates of men and women, aged 75 and older, to be 50 and 16 per 100,000. We believe that all people are integral parts of what makes up the human race. Aging should not be something that is feared or met with apprehension. It should be celebrated not just amongst the elderly but the youth as well. Within the elderly community lies great wisdom and we at CARS plan on spreading the word.
There are two populations in our society that I believe we have an obligation to work as hard as possible to secure as productive and contented future: the elderly and youth.
