Jake Watson (right), a Technical Resource Conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), talks about pasture health with Jeff Dodson, owner of Dodson Family Farms, during a survey of over grazed and heavy use areas at Dodson Family Farms, Crossville, TN, on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. Heavy use areas are plots of land that require protection to provide a stable, noneroding surface for areas frequently used by animals, people, or vehicles. Resource Conservationists provide our nation’s farmers, ranchers and forestland owners with the knowledge and tools they need to conserve, maintain and restore the natural resources on their lands and improve the health of their operations for the future.
NRCS offers this assistance at no cost to producers with the goal to give personalized advice and information. This information is based on the latest science and research, to help make informed decisions with suggested conservation practices that can help them reach their production and conservation goals. Spent all day in another session of Deacon School over in Gulf Breeze, long day but went well. During our lnch break their was another group also using the parish hall and one of them had this five-month old black lab that is in training to be an assistance dog. Neat thing is that this dog is being raised in a prison as an inmate project, she gets picked up on weekends just for socialization skills. I was fascinated by the project, and this really was a well behaved dog.
They only use black labs and golden retrievers because of their ability to learn and their personalites. That part didn't really surprise me!

Council continues to support our Financial Assistance Program because it directly benefits local community groups who would not normally qualify for any government assistance.
This year we are distributed $84,689 across 78 projects throughout our community.
Projects range from recreational activities, painting classes, theatre productions and dance and music therapy, to cultural and teaching children environmentally sustainable practices, mental health support groups, support for people with disabilities, and arts programs.
The projects reflect the diversity of community life in our City and support a wide range of issues of concern to Council and our residents.
They are also a sign that as a community, we are working together to ensure that for many people our City of Canterbury is truly a great place to live and work.
