Event for the International Day For Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, under the theme "More Than Mines".

This day aims to raise awareness about landmines and progress toward their eradication, and is a day that reminds us of the devastating effects of landmines and other explosive remnants of war (ERW). The annual commemoration also provides an opportunity to renew our commitment to a world free from the threat of mines and other remnants of war.

The theme for 2015 is “More than Mines”, signifying that mine action includes activities to address an increasingly wide range of explosive hazards, weapons and ammunition, risk education, and victim assistance. Mine action makes it possible for peacekeepers to carry out patrols, for humanitarian agencies to deliver assistance, and for ordinary citizens to live without the fear that a single misstep could cost them their lives.

Held at the Nyakuron Cultural Center in Juba, the South Sudan event was organized by the National Mine Action Authority in partnership with UNMAS and mine action organizations.

Pictured here, students and others gather at the Dr. John Garang Mausoleum for a march to the Nyakuron Cultural Center.

Renk has been at high risk of conflict related displacement since the beginning of the conflict in 2013. The region is currently hosting three main camps for displaced population: Abayok (5,000 residents) and Wunthau (2,000) were conceived as transit sites but they have endured as the returnees have not been able or willing to return to their areas for origin; and Payuer is home to nearly 2,000 IDPs who fled the shelling in Jodha last year.

"DAD" stands for Diabetes assistance dog. And this beautiful Lab could be Stella's. She is a pound rescue, and our trainer adopted her yesterday.

Most assistance dogs are gotten from breeders, to assure that the dog is well bred, and has no health problems. But our family absolutely believes in rescuing animals, and that pound puppies make excellent pets. We searched specifically for a dog trainer that would be willing to find and train a shelter dog, or else we really wouldn't be going through this process, as it's that important to us. This will be our trainers first time specifically using a shelter dog, and she is excited. Our trainer has been training DAD's for several years, works for Animal Control in Riverside county, and is a member (with her own dog) of a search and rescue team, works very closely with local area shelters in getting animals adopted, and so we think we found someone absolutely up for this challenge. She has been scouring shelters recently, looking for an appropriate candidate. She has some specific rerquirements, and things she specifically looks for when choosing a dog, and this girl passed the initial tests.

She will be spayed today, and then will have a month of recovery before beginning the training to become a DAD. She will have a thorough eye and hip exami to make sure there should be no issues. And the training involved will take between 1-2 years. We plan on blogging the whole process for my wife's company, adoptapet.com which provides links and searches to people looking for animals in shelters across the US. We will be blogging the process to show the world that pound puppies are amazing choices, and make great pets for people looking for animals.

DAD's are trained to smell and recognize both high and low blood sugar in diabetes patients. They are often aware of rapid declines in BS levels before the meters detect the rapid swings. This dog will be a certified assistance dog, and be able to go everywhere with my daughter, like the store, Disneyland, and airplanes. All that from a pound puppy!

We are so excited to get started, and I can't wait to get Stella involved in the process! I'm not neccessarily looking forward to having 4 dogs in the house...

Après la seconde ES du jour (la 1ère ES à été annulée ). Tout va bien pour la 6.

The first cases of rabies in Bali were reported in 2008. FAO established a technical assistance project with the Government of Indonesia with the aim of supporting national efforts to control the disease on Bali. This was to be achieved by establishing an effective programme to coordinate and facilitate rabies control with government agencies and partner organizations. As a result of the programme, human rabies cases were reduced from eleven per month in 2010 to just one per month the following year. Following a mass vaccination of dogs, there was another major reduction in 2012 and 2013, bringing the number of reported cases down to only one human case in all of 2013. The model developed in Bali is now being modified as appropriate and used in other affected parts of Indonesia to progressively control and eliminate the virus from the entire country.
