So I took about a thousand pictures trying to get something artistic and cool, but none worked and my daughter was playing with these 2 toys this morning. I thought it would be funny to do part of this assignment about a narcissistic caterpillar. I think I blew the rule of thirds, but I'm not totally sure.
The Calvert Photography Club photo assignment for 03/16/2019 was "Light". We could only submit two pictures for judging. These were my attempts from which two were submitted. The subject matter consisted of a strong LED light array source, a very small glass cube(frosted on two faces), a plastic diffraction grating sheet, sometimes a plastic fresnel lens sheet, and on the bottom a sheet of very white high gloss ink jet printing paper.
Hmm. So I don't love this one- my ideas didn't quite translate but in the interests of experimentation I'm putting it up anyway. :)
What I wanted was for the light from the big top to spill out from the doorway- I used a candle to draw the spirals (it has just this minute occurred to me that a yellow crayon would have done the trick much more effectively) and then used my pencils to draw over it, the colour of course not picking up in the really waxy areas...
Still, some of the texture I like.

I had entered trees for the silhouette contest, so I wanted to try something a little different. This is a "lighting painting" of a large palm tree in Balboa Park (San Diego). I took this image about 2 hours after sunset and, with the help of my wife, "painted" the trunk of the tree with flashlights. It gives the tree an unusual "ghostly" look.
I attempted to better the photo of my cat. Unfortunately Merlin had other plans, so I substituted Albert. I think that this photo improves on my earlier shot in many ways. Firstly, the sisal rug adds a great contrasting color and texture to the white fur. Also, I have managed to capture the moistness of his nose, which I think gives life to the subject. It is hard to say what message the photo conveys, but I hope that it makes people smile as that is what I was doing while trying to get the shot. This shot fills the criteria for texture, lighting and to a certain extent line. The jury is still out on whether it lives up to the composition criteria outlined in the handbook.
