As part of commemorating 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, Human Rights teams from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, have organized day-long workshops to discuss issues on the protection of women and girls.
In the capital Juba, discussions with members from the civil society, National Police, students, women groups and the legal fraternity also discussed various issues on law enforcement, South Sudan’s Transitional Constitution and issues pertaining to the International Human Rights Law.
It has been important to shed light on these issues, given that South Sudan is a signatory to various international treaties like The International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICPR), which shape international human rights today. These two international treaties were adopted on December 16, 1966 by the United Nations General Assembly.
Among those at the workshop were Simon Lumori Chairperson of South Sudan Human Rights Commissioner Central Equatoria State and the UNMISS Central Equatoria State Coordinator John Ugolo.
