Newark-on-Trent's Corn Exchange in grand Italian Baroque style is by Henry Duesbury. It was opened on 27th September 1848 and was not only used as a corn market, held every Wednesday, but also for lectures, exhibitions and musical entertainments. It continued to be used for trade by the local farmers, millers and maltsters until 1978. The building's most recent use was to house a night club. Sadly, the present 'To Let' sign looks ominous on such a grand Grade II Listed Building which sits prominently on Castlegate. It appeared on a list of 'Forgotten Buildings of Britain' produced by The Guardian newspaper recently:- www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2018/jun/09/forg...

David Chipperfield's design for new entrance on Museum island~ HSfS. www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2019/jul/08/david-chippe...

As a continuation of Friedrich August Stüler’s forum architecture, the James-Simon-Galerie serves as the new entrance building for Museum Island, completing the ensemble between the Kupfergraben canal and the south-west façade of the Neues Museum. Together with the ‘Archaeological Promenade’, it forms the backbone of the masterplan that was developed in 1999 and adopted as the basis for all further planning on Museum Island. The building is sited on a narrow strip of land where Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s ‘Neuer Packhof’ administration building stood until 1938.

This was the future once!

I remember wishing my dad would drive by slow enough for me to see the Time change to the Temperature, the height of technology when digital wasn’t everywhere.

This incoming structure was part of the local newspaper print works. Along with the unique modern facade of the ‘nearly’ Olympic-size Swimming Pool (now totally gone) were friendly welcomes to Leeds City Centre.

There was an outpouring of desire that it should not be demolished but it now remains a sad and painful reflection of what happens when the best of intention has no funding.

Of course? It is totally useless and redundant and it now seems no more than a middle finger from modern town planners and developers to the idiots like me who don’t like change.

The Evening Post tower is now allowed to decay in the most prominent part of the entrance to our city as an insult to Leeds’ evolution from a wool town to a centre of media and communication.

Leeds: the birthplace of moving images (over Leeds Bridge), Waddington’s Games with their Monopoly and enough playing cards to cover the world, dye works, tank factories, a centre for the arts, literature, science, medicine, Teltley’s Bitter, and world famous football team (not always for the right reasons, mind!).

It now supports its fame as the non-terminus to HS2, home of Channel 4, the Ministry of Stealth and Total Obscurity, and a carbuncle on the skyline that looks a bit like a flippin’ dalek which the planners did not foresee the creations of hurricane speed winds around it. Ho hum!

Large colourful rabbits in front of the iconic Ruins of St Pauls church in Macau. The Ruins of St. Paul's are the ruins of a 17th-century complex in Santo António, Macau, China. It includes what was originally St. Paul's College and the catholic Church of St. Paul also known as "Mater Dei", a 17th-century Portuguese church dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle. I recently spent a few days in Macau as part of a prize for teh Wanderlust Travel Magazine photo competition of 2018.

Here's the couple again, this time using only natural light and no flash, which was a challenge as dusk was approaching and the day was windy. I had to take a bunch of shots, hoping one caught a lull; this was the best. This meant the shutter was open longer to capture the ambient light that wasn't as bright as a flash.

Notice that yellow silk; it's VERY yellow. Silk from a million of their cousins from Madagascar was used to make an ornate cape.

See them with flash in the first comment below.

View of the model, Irene Warren, posing with a film camera for a Turners publicity shot, January 1957 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/AG801/3).

To read a blog about Turners advertising techniques see www.twmuseums.org.uk/engage/blog/turners-saved-my-marriage/.

Tyne and Wear Archives presents a set of images taken by the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. They were taken by the firm on is own account for possible use in their advertising campaigns. Turners frequently hired models to help promote their work and to encourage sales in their shops. Some of the shots are humorous or bizarre while others are quite suggestive.

The images are fascinating for what they tell us about the times that produced them – the fashions, the attitudes, the technology … Most of the images are quirky and almost seem to invite comments. If you’d like to suggest alternative captions we’d be delighted to hear them!

“Never did anybody look so sad. Bitter and black, halfway down, in the darkness, in the shaft which ran from the sunlight to the depths, perhaps a tear formed; a tear fell; the waves swayed this way and that, received it, and were at rest. Never did anybody look so sad.”

No pixels were harmed in the creation of this image........ It's an abstract shot of part of the new Amanda Levete Architects Exhibition Road courtyard entrance to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Unlike previous years where I've had a pretty good list of places to visit during the now annual 24hr London photography event, this time I went without much of a plan. Having made an arrangement to meet up with a couple of fellow photographers in Camden a bit later I jumped on the tube and headed to the V&A to photograph the recently opened Exhibition Road entrance.

This photo doesn't show much of it's architectural grandeur so I'd suggest you take a look at this Guardian article if you'd like to find out more about the building : www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2017/jun/28/v-and-a-vict...

Monument to the Revolution of the People of Moslavina (Spomenik Revolucije Naroda Moslavine).

Took this picture with my phone late Saturday night while I was sat in the front of an Italian restaurant on Lower Bridge Street, Chester. I shared this on Twitter & Instagram but didn’t think much about it but it seemed to have gained a lot of interest so thought I would add it to my flickr and facebook pages.

I’m curious, a few people commented that it reminded them of a Beryl Cook painting, a modern Jack Vettriano or even this Manchester Street scene that was talked about in the Guardian a while ago:

www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/jonathanjonesblog/2016/j...

I’m keen to know what peoples thoughts are – please let me know…..

Thanks!
