#462 Explore and Part of my Guardian assignment review set
“In the purple hill,
when the day is over,
the creatures sing
to awake my Moon.
She looks like me,
acts like me,
tunes like me…
but is not me!
In the purple hill,
when the night is watching,
the call of the wild
summons my alter.
She looks like me,
acts like me,
tunes like me…
but is not me!
In the purple hill,
when kodamas dance,
she shines over me
to play with your feelings…
She looks like me,
acts like me,
tunes like me…
but is not me?”

“One who awakens gradually out of a dream, a delicious, grotesque, impossible dream, to feel again the realities pressing into her soul.”
~Kate Chopin
Inspired by the dream as an artist to show the courageous soul that dares to defy those who thought all was impossible for one to succeed without them. That the art would just fade out over time to nothing.

Union Station is Toronto’s iconic gateway and a majestic Beaux-Arts landmark that has welcomed travelers since 1927. Located at 65 Front Street West, it’s not just Canada’s busiest transit hub but a living piece of history. From its soaring Great Hall to its modern food court and preserved storefronts, Union blends classic architecture with vibrant urban energy. It’s also a cultural destination, hosting rotating Art & Design exhibitions. Currently on display is A Transit Through Time, a powerful showcase of Black Canadian artists exploring themes of legacy, transformation, and self-expression.
In the hush of early morning, with no footsteps but our own, my wife and I wandered through stories etched in canvas and light. Each placard spoke, each brushstroke lingered, art not just seen, but felt. Union Station, even in stillness, moves you. Just steps from the Blue Jays stadium, this quiet moment felt like a grand slam for the soul.

The SANAA building - 134 windows, overwhelmed with architectural awards, but not economically viable
The SANAA building is an architecturally innovative university building erected in Essen in 2006, also known under the names "Zollverein School", "Zollverein-Kubus" and "Sanaa-Kubus". The building was designed by the Japanese architect Kazuyo Sejima and her colleague Ryue Nishizawa from the Tokyo architects SANAA.
No economically justifiable use could be found for the SANAA building since its construction. The failure of the private university was attributed to the very high operating costs of the building, in addition to the low number of students and income. These are estimated to be between 300,000 and 400,000 euros a year, which is around a thousand euros a day.
The Folkwang University of the Arts rents the building for its design department at a monthly price of 24,500 euros. A small part is brought back in through events. The building is now in serious need of renovation, although no one has been found who is interested, let alone an estimate

T-Banan Kungsträdgården (Kungsan), Sverige, Stockholm;
The Stockholm subway system is said to be the world's longest art exhibit - 110 kilometers long. Traveling by subway is like traveling through an exciting story that extends from the artistic pioneers of the 1950s to the art experiments of today.
Over 90 of the 100 subway stations in Stockholm have been decorated with sculptures, mosaics, paintings, installations, engravings, and reliefs by over 150 artists. The Kungsträdgården subway station looks like an archaeological excavation, with the remains of the old Stockholm Makalös palace. ...

Two housing complexes with two very different stories. In the foregrounds is Hopkins Charity, a square of cottages built around a private garden. Behind the old buildings the new construction is called Neo Bankside.
Charles Hopton was born c. 1654 into a wealthy merchant family and admitted in infancy to the Guild of Fishmongers. At his death in 1731 his will provided for almshouses to be built in the parish of Christchurch, Blackfriars for poor single men. By 1749, 26 cottages have been completed and have been occupied continually since July of 1752.
Neo Bankside, aptly renamed "Neo Blingside" because of the many manipulations they used to cut out the affordable housing that was in the original plan, once occupied went as far as the Supreme Court to close the upper floors of the Tate Modern in order to prevent museumgoers from looking into their apartments.
An interesting comparison of changing times. On my last London visit floors 6 thru 10 of the Tate Modern Blavatnik Building were closed and Hopton's Almshouses no longer sees the morning sun.

This sculpture entitled 'Seated' is on show outside the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill from 19th April - 29th October 2023.
It is by Tschabalala Self and she says "Taking a seat is a universal act of leisure and calm. I wanted to create a monumental sculpture for the public that spoke to this simple joy. The woman is strong, beautiful and self-possesses. She represents all individuals, but women in particular, who understand the power and importance of simple gestures that assert their right to take up space." (2022).
Tschabalala Self was born in 1990 and is an American artist
Tschabalala Self's first public sculpture stands three metres high and is made from patinated bronze. This monumental work was an everyday object - a seat - as an entry point for questions of permission and performance within public space. Its subject - poised, immaculately dressed, glancing to her left - emboldens onlooks to sit with confidence and comfort.
Through an expansive practice bringing together painting, printmaking, sculpture and collage, Self's depictions, predominantly of women, traverse different artistic traditions. Bland and femme bodies are particularly prevalent in her work, heating different subjects, or characters, with individual and powerful identities, many of which are reimagined from chance encounters. Through mediations on race and gender, Self's work is concerned with what it means to flourish as a human and how the self is performed and perceived within contemporary life.
