¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

One hour. One lion. One man leaning on a railing.

16 July 2009. Trafalgar Square, London. Over on the Fourth Plinth - Antony Gormley's exclusive space in Trafalgar Square - a succession of people acted out One & Other, his overblown vision of "an astonishing living monument representing the whole of humanity".

In the same vacuous vein, Gormley said:

"Through elevation onto the plinth, and removal from the common ground, the body becomes a metaphor, a symbol. In the context of Trafalgar Square with its military, valedictory and male historical statues to specific individuals, this elevation of everyday life to the position formerly occupied by monumental art allows us to reflect on the diversity, vulnerability and particularity of the individual in contemporary society. It could be tragic but it could also be funny."

Meanwhile, Suresh Kumar has his boots planted firmly on common ground. Representing nobody in particular.

Does the square celebrate monumental art? Or any 'art' at all?

Despite Antony Gormley's pontificating, a quick glance across the square showed that "military, valedictory and male historical statues" are no more than relics from a bygone age. They amuse visitors who stroll across a grand piazza or catch water from fountains. While even less deferential younger visitors swing their legs between the lions' paws, or make token attempts to climb the column.

Suresh's non-art received no funding from the Mayor of London, the National Lottery, nor Arts Council England. It was not filmed by Sky TV; nor reported in The Guardian.

FACE TO FACE

Portraits of Artists

The invention of photography ushered in the age of celebrity, eventually making it possible to distribute thousands—even millions—of pictures of notable people throughout the world. Artists and writers, like stage performers, political leaders, and others, quickly learned that photographs were an indispensable tool to fashion their public identities and spread their fame. Face to Face presents a sampling from out extraordinary collection of photographic portraits of artists, including painters, dancers, sculptors, poets, novelists, singers and other creative people from the past century and more. Among these are groupings about five artists who shrewdly mined the medium’s potential to represent them as the artists they wished to be: Thomas Eakins, Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe, Marcel Duchamp, and Frido Kahlo.

Large groups of portraits by Arnold Newman and Carl Van Vechten anchor the exhibition. Works by these two artists are key to our photography holdings: The Museum’s first-ever photography exhibition, in 1945, was a show of Newman’s contemporary portraits, titled Artists Look Like This. In 1965 we received a gift of more than 12,000 photographs by Van Vechten, a novelist and social butterfly who studiously recorded almost everyone he knew, including hundreds of African American artists.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art prides itself on being a place for artists—a site where they can encounter works of art that are touchstones for their own creativity, and a loving storehouse for their greatest achievements. So these wonderful portraits feel a little bit like family photos that we’re excited to share with you.

One of the wrapper artworks for Middlemass Scotch Abernethy biscuits, Wright's Biscuits. Photographer: Turner's.

Wright’s Biscuits was a well known company in South Shields, South Tyneside. Set up as a maker of biscuits, they started out by supplying their stock to ships in 1790, but after a fall in demand, Wright's turned to making more up-market biscuits. Wright's Biscuit factory closed in 1973.

Turner’s was established in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early 1900s. It was originally a chemists shop but in 1938 become a photographic dealer. Turners went on to become a prominent photographic and video production company in the North East of England. They had 3 shops in Newcastle city centre, in Pink Lane, Blackett Street and Eldon Square. Turner’s photographic business closed in the 1990s.

Graduating students from the School of Art and Design at the University of Gloucestershire presented the best of their work at this year’s Degree Show exhibition at the Private View on Friday 25 May.

In line with the show’s theme - New Arrivals – onboard this year are students showcasing work in Fine Art, Photography, Photojournalism, Visual Communications, Advertising, Graphic Design and Illustration at the North Terminal (Hardwick Campus) and South Terminal (Francis Close Hall Campus) in Cheltenham.

The show remains open to the public until Thursday 31 May, from 10am-4pm each day.

Just a couple of days after I read about pioneering photographer Anna Atkins* who would have thought I'd have the chance to make my very own cyanotype?!

Thanks to the wonderful Rachel Brewster at Liverpool Makefest (www.littlevintagephotography.co.uk/).
