William Morris - The Red House This has since turned into a major atrwork in the house with media coverage on the discovered painting www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2013/aug/18/hidden-mural...

The story of Melissa starts with Liam # 59. Although I have taken the portraits as individual strangers I met them as a beautifully matched couple so I have included an image of them together below.

Like Liam, Melissa has just finished college where she studied art and design. I think I was ready for the answer to my question of what she wants to work in ........ she is going to be a tattoo artist. I'm sure both her training and her beliefs will have equipped her with the skills and experience to create the most wonderful and original tattoos.

We talked about where their style came from and I asked if they saw themselves as Goths. Melissa said that they were a mixture of Punk and Goth rock and I later learnt that goth is a subculture which began in the early 80's as an off-shoot of the post-punk genre. Knowing this I can completely understand Liam and Melissa's tastes in fashion, music and aesthetics.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aesthetics

We talked about music and the Sex Pistols but I think maybe they thought that they were a group I'd have heard of and, as our encounter was so brief, they didn't want to go deeper.

Thank you Melissa for letting me take your portraits. I do hope you like them and that you enjoy your work as a tattoo artist. Let me know if you'd like copies of them and I'll forward them to you.

NB: The background to this image was a bit of a challenge as it was very green and contrasty with Melissa's hair. To make it more pleasing on the eye I colourised/blended the background. I'm still not sure it works but its preferable to the green version.

Attractions at the Hoppings fair in Newcastle.1952

The Hoppings is a popular fair in the North East of England, held in the last full week of June every year on Newcastle's Town Moor, spanning around 40 acres of land.

The Hoppings started out as a Temperance Festival in 1882, when Newcastle Temperance organisations decided to revive the annual gatherings that they had previously held, but included different festivities to coincide, to counter-attract the 'Summer Race Meeting' at Gosforth Park, which was seen as a source of drunkenness.

It proved to be a great success and the fair is still being enjoyed to this very day.

Risk-taking architect has to sell firm in fall from grace. One of Britain's most celebrated architects, Will Alsop, was forced to sell his business yesterday after being refused work in Britain because of what he claims is an increasing aversion to risk-taking. Six years ago Alsop won the building of the year award for his box-on-stilts Peckham library, in south-east London, but yesterday he complained of being blocked from designing schools and hospitals in Britain.

Seems appropriate on this momentous day when I turned down the opportunity of a lifetime: to strip off for Spencer Tunick's forthcoming Lowry installation. Public nudity does not appeal and, in any case, Salford is far too cold for outdoor nudity by real live people. Moreover, I am not entirely sure about the artistic merit of any work involving mass outdoor nudity. Sorry! ;-))
