Risk-taking architect has to sell firm in fall from grace. One of Britain's most celebrated architects, Will Alsop, was forced to sell his business yesterday after being refused work in Britain because of what he claims is an increasing aversion to risk-taking. Six years ago Alsop won the building of the year award for his box-on-stilts Peckham library, in south-east London, but yesterday he complained of being blocked from designing schools and hospitals in Britain.

Seems appropriate on this momentous day when I turned down the opportunity of a lifetime: to strip off for Spencer Tunick's forthcoming Lowry installation. Public nudity does not appeal and, in any case, Salford is far too cold for outdoor nudity by real live people. Moreover, I am not entirely sure about the artistic merit of any work involving mass outdoor nudity. Sorry! ;-))

As I was making my way to my next location I came across this , just a few hundred yards from where I was staying.

It was the Sebastião Salgado- Genesis- photography exhibition on display outside in the open air in these large rusty metal mounts , free gratis and for nothing. That's the cathedral you can see behind by the way.

Now I'd made a special visit to the Natural History in London back in 2013 and paid good money to view this exhibition indoors and I wasn't disappointed then. I also own the book of it as he is one of my all time favourite photographers. To add to that the mounts reminded me of the Richard Serra sculptures I'd enjoyed in Bilbao so I thought this was meant to be.

I took a couple of shots for the record but decided to come back later to study the photographs , as this was something to savour.

And indeed I did savour it - I thoroughly enjoyed a second look around 11pm whilst eating a delicious lime and mango ice cream cornet.

Now that's a great experience you don't get too often - sublime I'd call it !

The North East has some of the most stunning scenery in the United Kingdom. The region looks great in any weather but adding a touch of snow or frost can really transform the appearance of the landscape. Persian wrestlers, 1919 - a picture from the past

Mabel D. Merrill's image is typical of the kind of photograph submitted to the National Geographic Society in its early years. Their images were intended to be serious documentary studies of local people and cultures but are now seen by contemporary viewers as curiosities.

(more commonly known as the Royal Artillery Memorial) at Hyde Park Corner, London.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Proud Remembrance of the Forty Nine Thousand and Seventy Six of All Ranks of the Royal Regiment of Artillery Who Gave Their Lives for King and Country in the Great War 1914-1919

"Created by Charles Jagger and Lionel Pearson, the memorial is a shocking collision of technology and the human body. It enacts in its own form the destructive energies of war. The ambivalence of its style, caught between figurative accuracy and the modernist daring of its age (it was unveiled in 1925) enhances its dreadful power." Jonathan Jones, writing in the Guardian

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"On 1 July 1899, the Royal Artillery was divided into three groups: the Royal Horse Artillery of 21 batteries and the Royal Field Artillery of 95 batteries comprised one group, while the coastal defence, mountain, siege and heavy batteries were split off into another group named the Royal Garrison Artillery of 91 companies.[1] The third group continued to be titled simply Royal Artillery, and was responsible for ammunition storage and supply." wikipedia

In 1914, the Royal Horse Artillery provided light, mobile guns in support of the cavalry. It was the senior arm of the artillery.

Each Brigade of Cavalry had one RHA battery attached. Each battery comprised 5 officers, 200 men, 228 horses and six 13-pounder field guns.

Forces-war-Records web site

"The Brigade was the basic tactical unit of the Field Artillery of the British army in the Great War of 1914-1918. It was composed of a Brigade Headquarters and a number of batteries of guns or howitzers. At full establishment, a brigade of 18-lbr field guns consisted of 795 men of whom 23 were officers. For a 4.5-inch howitzer brigade, this was 755 and 22."

What is an artillery brigade?

"Siege Batteries (Royal Garrison Artillery) were equipped with heavy howitzers, sending large calibre high explosive shells in high trajectory, plunging fire. The usual armaments were 6 inch, 8 inch and 9.2 inch howitzers, although some had huge railway- or road-mounted 12 inch howitzers. As British artillery tactics developed, the Siege Batteries were most often employed in destroying or neutralising the enemy artillery, as well as putting destructive fire down on strongpoints, dumps, store, roads and railways behind enemy lines.

Just trying to gather information about 16 Brigade, RHA at present.

And, because he was probably involved in it, in the Second Battle of Bapaume as well:

Official History of the NZ Rifle Brigade at Bapaume.

"In November 1918 16 Bde RHA consisted of A,Q, and U Batteries RHA, each armed with six 18 pdr guns, and was serving with the Fourth Army in France. This meant that it was a reinforcing unit which could be deployed anywhere in the Fourth Army's sector to add strength to the artillery corps and or divisional artillery for a particular operation."

"Lieut. Leslie Parry Huggins, RHA: Served with 'A' Battery (Chestnut Troop), RHA, from June 1917 to the end of the war. In the second half of 1917 'A' Battery, took part in trench warfare at Vadencourt, Cambrai and Epeny. In early 1918 it helped to cover the withdrawal of the 66th Division. It was present at the capture of Villers Bretoneux and during the summer, Morlaincourt and Hamel. It fought in the battles of Amiens, Bapaume, Epeny, Cambrai and St. Quentin in 1918. Towards the end of the year it took part in the general offensive which broke the Hindenburg Line. It fired its last round at Orrs on 4 Nov 18."

It's not yet launched and already I'm complaining:- the branding is a bit obscene, the pricing mechanism is far too complicated, the annual membership/access charges should be much lower, it should be oyster-compatible, casual users should be able to use it from day 1, and there aren't nearly enough cycle hire stations outside zone 1...

HOWEVER... none of that has stopped me, and I have succumbed to the temptation of signing up... my annual membership key arrived in the post this morning, and I can't wait to start using it! :-)
