This morning, my appointment to get two cortisone injections in my knees has just been cancelled and rescheduled for Monday. With a temperature of -9C (windchill -13C), I wish that meant I didn't need to go out in the cold and clear the snow off my car. However, I have a few errands that I really need to run.

This photo was taken on 28 October 2018, when a group of 15 of us went south of the city on a birding trip to one of my favourite areas. This included Chain Lakes and Pine Coulee Reservoir. I just love some of the landscape through which we drove - barren, rugged, middle-of-nowhere kind of scenery. It looks so different in each season - I think my favourite time of year is when there is a covering of snow on the empty hills and ice on most of the water. I've still not had the courage to drive in this area myself, as I know that I might never find my way out.

As on almost all these day trips out of the city, almost every bird is far, far away, needing at least binoculars and best of all, a scope. Also, as always happens, my camera lens turns to things other than birds. Scenic shots are always taken - after all, I feel that it is important to record the habitat of any birds seen.

We saw so many Swans (Tundra and Trumpeter) on various sloughs and in flight. What a sight they were, with the sun shining on their pure white feathers. Love to hear the Trumpeter Swans "trumpeting". A huge thrill was when our leader led us to a small creek where there were four American Dippers, happily bobbing and dipping, and swimming under water. They weren't bothered by our presence at all.

Terry, you took us on yet another amazing trip! You even arranged with the weatherman for a beautiful, sunny day, though the morning was very cold and windy. It couldn't have been a better outing - so very enjoyable. Thanks so much, Linda and Robin, for the ride all day - greatly appreciated!

Simple and complex tools, all in a row.

Subject: The First Shall be Last and the Servant of All

Gospel: Mark 9:39-37, 2nd Reading: James 3:16-4:3

The First Shall be Last and the Servant of All! It takes a moment to get you head around this statement that Jesus is delivering to his disciples in today’s Gospel reading.

Jesus is always walking with his disciples somewhere. Today’s journey’s includes a critical teaching about his mission; Jesus states “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.” Isn’t it interesting that Jesus is living out this reality of being last and the servant of all, as he shares with them about his death and resurrection. The disciples respond to this mission by being silent.

In direct opposition to his message, Jesus manages to ask them what they were talking about and they answer “who would be greatest among them.” Ahh, yes the disciples where focused on themselves which is a very human thing to do. If you are like me, the correction that Jesus gives them stands out in our Gospel reading, like a candle in the dark. “If anyone wishes to be the first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”

I shall not be hard on these disciples-they are in training. I can smile at their failure, because I can see myself in them. We do have an advantage though! We know the story! We have the Holy Spirit. We have the deposit of the Faith. We have the Church. We have the sacraments.

So what does it mean that the first shall be last and how do we apply it to our lives today? Let us start with the fact that all of us are called to a life of holiness and what this looks like will be unique to each one of us. This life long goal of seeking holiness is our journey. Jesus, by his invitation bids us forward, when he gives us HIS teaching to “take up our own cross and follow him.” When we follow him, we begin to understand the phrase “the first shall be last and the servant of all.”

It is not complicated! Let me give you some examples within our own parish.

1.We have brave souls who can no longer leave their homes. Time after time, I have been moved by their faith. I call them prayer warriors. They offer up their suffering daily. In the secular world, it would appear that they have served their purpose…and have become last.

2.We have our bingo ministry. Where familiar faces of our parish are serving the crowds. They have become last and the servant to the many.

3.We have those who are dedicated to praying the Rosary daily. The faces of legion of Mary are are found serving in every capacity of our parish.

4.We have the women’s group…who are always planning something that reaches out into the community to feed and cloth the needing.

5.We have our ushers who are the first faces that greet us with a smile when we enter and leave the church.

6.We have our music ministers who lift our spirits in each Mass.

7.We have our cherished catechists who teach our children and adults.

8.We have those behind the scenes that are arranging flowers, changing lights, fixing doors, picking up garbage.

9.We have administrative staff, accountants and committees who guide us.

10.We have our lector’s and Eucharistic ministers.

11.We have those hidden ones, that quietly serve those in their families, in their jobs and community.

12.We have a priest who Shepherds and serves us faithfully.

I now quote a prayer from Francis of Assisi, that captures the qualities of those who serve Jesus and his flock:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace

Where there is hatred, let me sow love

Where there is injury, pardon

Where there is doubt, faith

Where there is despair, hope

Where there is darkness, light

And where there is sadness, joy

O Divine Master, grant that I may

Not so much seek to be consoled as to console

To be understood, as to understand

To be loved, as to love

For it is in giving that we receive

And it's in pardoning that we are pardoned

And it's in dying that we are born to Eternal Life

It has been beautiful to see our community come together during a pandemic. It takes courage for each of us to be here and serve. Now, we will collectively offer up our our hearts with Christ in this Eucharistic celebration. We receive communion as a family. We carry Jesus, our model of service, with us as we leave through the church doors to serve the world.

During the World War I on the mountain of Monte Cengio there were heavy battles. Today the whole area is arranged as memorial park. This interesting monument to a soldier was made of grenade pieces.
