By early 2015, my longtime friend and guide Naing Naing had been working for a tour agency for a year, and had adapted to the standards they required for their clients. No longer were we randomly choosing homes to sleep in and picking up veggies in the local shop for them to cook in the manner of their choosing. Now all the food was purchased in Kyaukme town and carried in, and there was a set pool of homestay hosts. Early in the morning before the other trekkers awoke, Naing Naing took the squishy weak excuse for sliced bread sold in many parts of Asia and carefully toasted it on the fire. Truly an artisanal method for preparing factory-produced crap.

My dear friend Honey Soe, middle daughter of my friend and guide Naing Naing, had joined her father when he joined a tour agency. While her overnight trips weren't as extensive as his, and she could only speak Burmese and flawless English but no local dialects, she was still doing wonderful work guiding around town and doing short treks. These days, Honey Soe has earned her official Myanmar license and I was so proud to recommend her as a translator/fixer to a friend who started his own independent tours in Myanmar last year. Which, if you're interested, are available here: dustinmain.com/tour-to-myanmar/

I thought this might be the least Chinese-y Chinatown I'd ever seen, until I visited Havana's Chinatown.

At least, that's what I believe is happening. There were multiple guys with these bicycle-pulled cargo wagons, empty and hanging out. I assumed they were either looking for clients or were already waiting for someone to bring cargo to them.

My friend Bobo's little niece, adorable with excellent English skills.

Shot on the mystery film roll ... I developed this so long ago but didn't get around to scanning it, so I forgot what camera I shot this with.

Arista Premium 400 which I am sure I pushed probably to 1600 in this case because I got some pretty contrasty images.

Shot through a wet and fogged-up lens.

My hosts' daughter (right) and niece (left). The daughter taught me the only memorable word in Spitian dialect--"juley", like a Himalayan aloha/shalom--because like most 2-year-olds she repeated herself all day long.

This is the famous reason foreign tourists take this train, which runs nearly twice as slowly as the bus. It's unfortunately not easy to photograph from inside the train! In full knowledge of the stunning view this aqueduct provides, the train is actually designed to stop for passengers to get out and take photos in (relative) safety. But of course, those shots can't include the train passing over...

Another branch in the backyard last week. Nikon F3HP, 105mm f/2.4 Micro-Nikkor lens, Arista Premium 400 (really Kodak Tri-X), Rodinal 1:50. Love this macro lens….

I resolve to make the coffee meetings happen a little more frequently this year.

Gotta love those innocent, happy expressions...and total lack of understanding.
