A few days before Labor Day I walked down to the Irondequoit Bay outlet and out to the end of the west breakwater pier. We had high clouds and bright sun. I was in the mood for taking pictures.

As beautiful as a sunset can be, many times sunset photos become a little too bland, too cliche or repetitive. Try adding some interest to the foreground, and voila... masterpiece. Maybe.
I like the contrast in this shot, and not only between the semi-bright sky and the almost silhouetted Birch tree branches. I like how the sparse blotches of pink clouds contrast against the very prevalent pale blue color. It adds a touch of interest, keeping it from looking too plain. The pink clouds being near the bottom of the photo serves to "balance" out the frame; without them, the photo would have too much negative space for my liking.
As always, I really love hearing your thoughts and critiques. Thank you!
The good news is that the camera works and that there is no light leak. I worried about that because the lock of the back door no longer works and I had to clamp it shut with an elastic band.
More good news is that there is no sharpness drop-off towards the corners. The bad news is that this is so because there already is no centre sharpness.

Back under the bridge.
All in all, I paddled about five miles that day. I took millstream fork instead of the main channel, paddling up through the wetlands, under two bridges, and into Ellison Park. My way was soon blocked by deadfalls across the narrowing creek. I turned around paddled under the two bridges and back into the wetlands.

35mm film shot of my Dad (1926-1983) and Penny (1969-1982) walking among the pines, aspens and birches in the campground at Lake Bemidji State Park in Bemidji, Minnesota. It was the fall of 1974 and he had come up to visit me at college.
The photo was taken with dad's Argus C3 Rangefinder 35mm camera. He (a J-school graduate) was giving me some lessons. Up until then, the only camera I had ever used was a Kodak Instamatic. I think I had the range set better on the trees in the foreground than on Dad and Penny, but it didn't turn out too bad.
Dad got me my first SLR (a Pentax H2) that Christmas.

Afternoon light bouncing off a 200-year-old woolens mill across the mill pond. At that time it was the headquarters for Digital Equipment Corporation, the largest manufacturer of minicomputers in the world.
From wikipedia:
After the mill shut down in 1950, local businessmen bought the property and began leasing it as office space. Digital Equipment Corporation moved into the complex in 1957....
The mill complex is also home to the oldest working hand wound clock in the country.

This large model of a steam locomotive (I think the scale must be 1:10) was built by German railroad apprentice mechanics and stands in the hall of Darmstadt central station. If you insert a 50 cent coin the wheels will turn for a few minutes.
I shot it through the perspex casing that protects the model from vandalism and probing fingers. It came out quite well. Good contrasts, as always with an Argus, especially when stopped down.

This one is from 1955. I acquired this camera from the estate of a retired US Army Colonel who was stationed in West Germany in the early 1950s. This was the first camera he purchased after he arrived back in the US. His other camera and lenses were all made in the Soviet-occupied city of Dresden, East Germany.
The Argus was made in the US and enjoyed a run in production from 1939 to 1966.
We met our daughter and her boyfriend in Kansas City for lunch recently, and while we waited for our food, these two ladies were seated at a table across from us. It struck me as such an evocative scene with the friends engaged in conversation as the soft winter light was coming in from the window.
I really wanted to capture the moment, and as is typically the case, I had a film camera with me, this time an Argus C3 made in 1957, and which my daughter's boyfriend gave me for Christmas. I guessed the distance at 15ft, set the camera aperture to the triangle between f5.6 and f8, and set the shutter to 1/10 sec...I set the camera on the table and hoped for the best.
I exposed two frames and this one turned out the best. It never ceases to amaze me how good the images taken with the venerable "brick" turn out. This is the 4th one in my collection...I just can't seem to pass them by when I find them at estate sales. Taken using Foma 400, developed with Xtol at 1:1 dilution.
I'm having a lot more fun than I imagined I would with my Argus C3 rangefinder. Intentional double exposures are easy with this camera because film advance and shutter cocking are separate operations.

Penfield High School Class of 1968. Those of us still in the Rochester area have a get-together each year with a gathering at a local watering hole on Friday and a picnic in the park on Saturday. We were missing some of the regulars due to travel and, of course, the in-memorium list keeps creeping upward.

If I want a long walk at Durand Eastman Park that does not follow the lakes, I take the yellow ski trail. It winds its way up and down the hills and ridges around the golf course. In the winter it is a one way trail due to one steep stretch where mixing directions would be a very bad idea -- and where it would be dangerous going down unless one really knew what they were doing.
It was good to be back out with the Brick. The film is long-outdated Kodak Gold 200 cross-processed in D76. It gives a low-contrast negative needing a lot of contrast expansion in the Gimp. It would be tricky to print in a darkroom, methinks.

The forest in my back yard.
It happens from time to time that I want to develop a roll of film but have a few shots left. At which point I go wandering around the back yard taking photographs of the same old stuff but not, I hope, in the same old way. The light that afternoon demanded that I look up and see how it filtered through the leaves and splashed against the trunk. It's just one tree but it felt like I was looking up through a forest canopy.

The first challenge on the Springer Mountain approach trail was getting from the Reflecting Pool to the top of Amicalola Falls.
You go up one long flight, walk a short way on a mostly level path, then start up again. Several of the turnarounds had larger platforms for taking breaks and photographs.
(It appears that my Cinestill developer had had too many rolls of film developed with it. Both this and the previous roll were significantly under-developed. Cinestill one-step developer has its advantages, but I plan to go back to my Kodak D76.)

One of the most popular 35mm cameras in history. The C3, also known as "the brick" was produced from 1939 to 1966, and sold over 2.2 million units.
Easy to find in America, but less common here in the UK. I'm very grateful to my parents-in-law for bringing one over at Christmas, along with a Micro-Nikkor lens.
