This is a very old image scanned from an Ektachrome slide. I took this photo in 1959 in Verdunville, West Virginia. I remember a hazy hollow with a lot of coal smoke, much poverty and a great dependence on the coal mines. This is in the Appalachian mountains in the heart of coal mining country.
I processed this as a monochrome image and gave it a vintage look. I then blended it with a color layer and adjusted the opacity to allow just a tiny bit of color to show through. This image may have no appeal to any one else, but to me it represents what I remember about that part of the country 50 years ago.
This photo was taken with my old Argus C3, a 35mm rangefinder camera that was quite popular in those days.
I got to hike Stony Brook State Park one day in September. I followed the gorge trail up and the west rim back. It is a place I have hiked and photographed many times over the decades - my parents used to take us camping there as kids.

Inspiration Point with the 100mm lens
I discovered (by opening the back cover!) that I still had a roll of Ilford Delta 100 film loaded in the Argus C3 with the 100mm lens. The last photographs I have posted with that lens are from 2014, so it has been a while. Unfortunately, after I closed the camera back up, I remembered "400" instead of "100', meaning I had to guesstimate a two-stop push when I developed it. Such is life.
Anyway, when I realized I still had film in the camera, I knew I wanted to get it down to Letchworth State Park and Inspiration Point.

My soul and my camera need the woods and water.
Back in October I loaded a roll of long-expired Kodak Gold 200 in the old-but-not-expired Argus C3 with the 35mm lens and went for a walk through the neighborhood and down to Durand Eastman Park. The colors came out intense, but it was that sort of day.

This year, Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt was inducted into the UNESCO cultural world heritage list. Since that very day, banners, posters and flags all over town make sure that everyone knows about it, whether they want to or not.

About three weeks ago in Durand Eastman Park on a beautiful day. I parked by the start of the yellow ski trail, followed it all the way around then down the west side of Durand Lake and over the ridge to the start of the Eastman Lake trail. I followed it along the east side of Eastman Lake then back along the west side to return to the car in the deepening dusk.

I found this beautiful Argus C3 at an Estate Sale recently and picked it up for $10...it works perfectly. I found the flash attachment at a Flea Market for $5 and it works too. This is my second C3 and this one is a Colormatic dating to 1956. Captured with my Canon 5D mk IV using two Photogenic 1250 Powerlight strobes.
The Argus C3, affectionately known as "The Brick," boasts a fascinating history. Introduced in 1939, it emerged as a symbol of reliability and simplicity in the realm of 35mm film cameras. Its robust design even earned it the moniker "The American Leica."
During World War II, the Argus C3 gained popularity among soldiers and war correspondents for its durability. Beyond its wartime significance, the Argus C3 continued to be a favored choice for amateur photographers post-war, selling a record-breaking 2.2 million units over 33 years of production. Its affordability and straightforward functionality made it accessible to a broad audience, solidifying its status as one of the most popular American cameras in history, a distinction it maintains even today.
The camera's unique design and its substantial contribution to photography cement its place as a noteworthy artifact in the evolution of film cameras.

Shot on the 23nd of Argust, 2023
This is the fourth time I participated in Argus Day. As last year, no double exposures, no blank shots, no ripped film, no out-of-focus shots. Still, I don't think that the Argus will become my favourite camera any time soon.

Letchworth State Park. Walking up the the westside path from the Lower Falls.
There is a pull-off at the head of the trail along the east rim and down to the Lower Falls footbridge. I followed the trail down to and across the footbridge, up and around the short loop on the west rim, then back down and up the car.
