Within the richly ornamented halls of Porto’s historic palace, this marble relief unfolds like a dream carved in stone. Figures surge and intertwine in a dramatic dance—angels descending, mortals rising—capturing the Romantic spirit that shaped much of nineteenth-century Portuguese art. The sculptor’s mastery is evident in every fold of drapery and anguished expression, transforming cold marble into a living tableau of faith and struggle. Bathed in soft light, the work bridges mythology and human emotion, echoing the grandeur of Portugal’s artistic revival. Even without a confirmed signature, its beauty speaks unmistakably of the era’s devotion to the sublime.
The rooftop of Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera, features Antoni Gaudí’s uniquely designed chimneys that resemble abstract sculptures. Located in Barcelona, Spain, these surreal structures contribute to the building’s whimsical and artistic aesthetic. With their organic shapes and mosaic-like textures, the chimneys not only serve a functional purpose but also exemplify Gaudí’s innovative approach to architecture, blending utility and art. Casa Milà’s rooftop is a must-visit destination for architecture enthusiasts and is a key example of Catalan Modernisme.
Excerpts from a letter by Peter Murray, the Editor of Architectural Design, addressed to Cedric Price, published at the end of the series ending with the pages shown here (AD 1972). This experience of making sense of information and quality for printing purposes obviously drove Peter mad with frustration.
“Dear Cedric
Thanks God that’s over! The hassle I’ve had… But it was worth it. We’ve shown your stuff as it really is – the good stuff and the bad – (you must admit those private houses are best forgotten!).- its knocked your standing as a STAR – but then too much realism does that to all of them anyway (a good thing)
Some of it has been difficult to understand for me and, most probable, impossible for the readers; but then, as has often happened in the past, things tend to fit in as time goes by and we can see that you’ve been right all the time.
In AD last month Martin Pawley quoted Rem Koolhaas (who the hell is he?) as saying that you were a prince desperately trying to become a frog – I thought that was very true – a dandy who only wears grey, an art boy who suppresses style, a communicator who purposefully makes comprehension a task, breakfast of champagne and grouse at the Savoy and lunch with the freaks at Phun City and a real concern with the communal life style while leading a life of individuality.
But you’ve seen a lot of things no one else has seen, you’ve influenced a lot of good people and almost surreptitiously turned your hairy ideas into well researched feasibility and along into mainstream of architectural thinking.
Yours truly,
Peter Murray”
Well said Peter.
By the way the building on right is Lasdun's University of East Anglia.

I remember on Sundays; my mother would take me over to shop on 13th Ave (Boro Park) cause of the "Blue Laws" and we'd pass these groups of older Italian men playing Bocce Ball in the dirt under the cool shade of the L .
And once in a great while I'd see the train that ran on street level. My mother said it delivered the bananas from the boat.
I never found out if she was pulling my leg or what..
I miss dem ghosts.

Rising above the treetops, this modern concrete tower in Porto showcases the city’s evolving architectural identity. Its bold geometric form and long horizontal bands of glass contrast sharply with the natural greenery in the foreground and the older, low-rise building at its base. The façade, marked by raw concrete textures and sleek glass windows, embodies the Brutalist and functionalist influences that shaped late 20th-century Portuguese design. Against a clear blue sky, the tower feels both imposing and precise, representing Porto’s balance between tradition and innovation, heritage and progress. A striking symbol of urban growth, it defines the city’s changing skyline.
utilising a subtle mix of traditional and contemporary materials and forms, the material palette aims to blend the old and new, to create an light, spacious enjoyable family room.
