I've never been able to win at these games before.

Pinball, camera, building : all of these can function as machines.

A Pinball machine requires balls and a player

A camera needs light to travel its path and an operator

A building needs people to inhabit and use its systems.

Pachinko, the sister game of pinball, launches balls with an artillery function similar to taking photos with a digitally modified vintage camera.

Both games require the kind of meditation that is like counting cash with a bank teller. So does smoking a cigar.

These machines are part of a lost era that cries out to be re-linked to the present in a manner that sustains and releases its latent charm.

So I'm adding a series of pinball machine designs to my portfolio, starting with this basic design proposal made in the drawing style of Aldo Rossi, whose sketchbook is a dream world I've been living in the last two days on and off.

Lighted stairway to the second floor of the Ground Kontrol in Portland, Oregon. The ground floor has a bar and retro arcade games, while the second floor is full of classic pinball machines.

Poor Inky.

Ms Pac-Man was introduced in 1982, and sometime between then and the time I was old enough to play with toys with swallowable parts, this plastic wind-up toy found its way into my grandma’s drawer of wonders (which mostly contained pots of bubble solution, clockwork mice, and a scary two legged fuzzy black disc wind-up toy we dubbed the “spidermouse”- I’m unsure if it ever had eyes). Ms P is rather covered in colour transfer marks from her stablemates now, but she still munches.

This is the dual cabinet competitive version of the 1997 Sega Motor Raid arcade game, from Out Run creator Yu Suzuki, in the mini-arcade inside the South Keys Cineplex-Odeon multiplex in Ottawa South.

It's a futuristic Akira-inspired motorcycle racing game, where you can knock other players off their bikes Road Rage-style.

What raised my ire is that the tagline below the logo reads, and I quote exactly, "No mercy for anyone who get's in the way." What? Why is there an apostrophe in "gets"? That is not correct punctuation! "Gets" is not a contraction! Sega of Japan needs a better proofreader! "I sure hope someone got fired for that one!" ;-)

Large On Black

Explored: Mar. 30th 2009

Luis and I had some real awesome ideas for the shoot and the first was scratched because of rain and the other was because the place we had didn't come through for us. Since we didn't have many other options on a Saturday night in Raleigh, NC, we just set up shop in the back of venue and had fun. He is easily one of the nicest people I have worked with so far. This guy has a lot of heart and it shows on his new album, which will be out April 21st.

We were real lucky to have his tour manager with us to keep kids from finding ways back there and bothering us. He was awesome. Some kids are just too funny and I wish I had recorded some video of them.

My lights are still on medical leave, so I had to make do with the good ole speedlites, once again...

Leave your thoughts!!

May the 4th be with you, pull trigger to start

I forgot I took these photos back when I went out to Greensburg of this used gaming store in town called Warp Zone. It feels like they have anything you could imagine and lots of these Arcade1Up cabinets you can play. If you’re in south western Pennsylvania and find yourself looking for some second hand games/systems stop out.

After a long grueling week, there's nothing Stormtrooper Bruce looks forward to more than Movie Night with the guys! As such, STB usually goes all out, knowing they feel the same way. However, tonight, he received an urgent plea for help, so he and the guys packed up the essentials and took the party where it was needed the most!

Fett: Well, look what the exhaust fumes of a Jawa Sandcrawler blew in. Welcome to my humble rust bucket cargo hold! Took you long enough!

STB: Well, we came as soon as we got your cryptic message. But... um.. I thought you were in desperate need of help!

Fett: Well, if that's all you brought, then yes, I am in desperate need of help.

TK-1110: Hold on there. We lugged all this down here in record time! You could be a little more grateful.

TK-432: And you still haven't dusted! I told you guys we'd need something to sit on!

STB: So, explain again why you needed our help. And it better be good!

Fett: Well, your Precious P has forbidden me to roam the ship this time. Doesn't want anyone to know I'm here. Can't leave this deck without his Bodyguards as escort. Not even to the Mess Hall!

STB: Either you just delivered him a very special bad guy, or he's about to give you a list of very special bad guys to go pickup.

Fett: Either way, I'm stuck here playing arcade games and darts with Chewie, and I can only stand to lose so many times, if you get my drift! And please tell me you have some pizza's coming later. That charcuterie board isn't going to last any time if Chewie gets hold of it first!

Debated long and hard about posting this shot...

I wasn't planning to take any pictures on Buzz, but my son and I were in the car in front of my wife and daughter. I was whipping up on all of them when we hit the projection room. As we entered, I grabbed the control stick from my son and turned us around 180 degrees to "shoot" my family behind us when I saw the awesome projector rays. I didn't really have time to think about the setup, so I just grabbed my camera and fired, focusing solely on the projector light. Next time, I'll go for the greater DOF to get the family in focus too. At any rate, I still like the way this one turned out.

Thanks for looking!

Nothing says summer fun like fairs and carnivals. Games like this seem to be a staple at every fair that I've ever been to and, while fun, they can be quite challenging.

These long cold winter months often makes me think back fondly of the fun and carefree days of summer.
