Nothing like as grand as Edinburgh’s renowned thoroughfare. The ex-Glasgow & South Western Railway signal cabin is long gone, and likewise the buses of AA and A1 Services. The two Ayrshire operators were co-operative businesses that ultimately fell into the Stagecoach fold. Approaching the level crossing is A1 Services GSD229, a Guy Arab IV of 1955 with Northern Counties bodywork.

Measuring 321 meters, it was, until 2007, the tallest building used exclusively as a hotel (now highest is Marriott Marquis also located in Dubai). It is one of the most recognizable hotels in the world. It was designed in 1993 by architect Tom WrightL
