Our flight home from Cuba gave us a fine view of Toronto. Queen Street runs straight from the lower left to the upper middle.
This is a view of the Hetch Hetchy reservoir in Yosemite National Park. We were going on a wildflower walk along the reservoir. We walked over the Shaughnessy Dam and through a tunnel. Then we notice that a major thunderstorm was approaching. We return to the car.

Edaville's excursion train, with Monson #3 on point, approaches the junction named for the railroad's founder, Ellis D. Atwood. The track branch that goes camera left takes the train on the original loop around Atwood Reservoir, of which only a portion remains. The track heading camera right keeps the train on the current, 2-mile loop.

With just a few hundred yards to go, Mount Washington's Steam Locomotive #2 "Ammonoosuc" and her cherry red coach are entering the final curve on the line and are about to make climb the short, steep stretch that leads to the summit platform. In the late afternoon, this is the last chance to catch the train in sunlight, as it will shortly enter the deep shadows created by the Sherman Adams Summit Building on which I am standing. A couple of hundred feet ahead, they will pass a small cone of piled rocks, with a white, wooden monument on it, dedicated to the memory of 23 year-old Lizzie Bourne, who died of in a terrible storm back in 1855, before there was a Cog Railway. She was the first woman to die on Mt. Washington and was literally a few hundred feet from the safety of the Tip-Top House. Shortly, Engineer Joe Eggleston will blow one, long, mournful whistle. While this is normal procedure as the crew approaches either the summit or the base, it is particularly touching here, as they approach the summit that a lot of people have died without ever reaching over the years.
And yes, that stretch of pavement in the upper portion of this photo is the Mt. Washington Auto Road, which comes up the east side of the mountain. Right here below the summit is the only place where the railway and the road actually converge. Since the railway and the auto road are on opposite sides of the mountain, their respective base terminals are actually quite far apart. I believe the drive between the two is something like 46 miles and takes about an hour and 10 minutes to complete.

We are at roughly 3400m, about a kilometre or so from Lamayuru (turn left before the pale cream rocks), entering the zone of irrigation. Roads begin to appear in the scene; prominent is the main road from Srinagar to Leh, high on the slopes. Our trek from Pahalgam in Kashmir, across the Great Himalaya range to Rangdom and then by Kanji and the Shilla gorge on to Lamayuru, nears its end.
The Flickr mapping gives Kashmir as the location, which may be politically true but scenically and culturally we are firmly in Ladakh.
1st May 2018. Hunslet 0-6-0ST No.7 [works No.2705 from 1945] Beatrice works hard as she approaches Holywell Halt with a Bolton Abbey to Embsay train. The railway is part of the Embsay And Bolton Abbey Steam Railway.

The New Zealand Bendigo is a ghost town high on a hill once mined for gold. Some ruins of the old stone miner's huts remain and some dangerous mine shafts. We arrived just as a rain storm was heading down the valley from Lake Wanaka. Found gold only in the colour of the tussock grasses and moved on.
