GWR Train 150261 approaches Carbis Bay station en route to St Ives from St Erth, Cornwall.

Southbound 11Z calls an approach at Pkin as they were told by the Roanoke dispatcher to hold short of Vesuvius for 16T. Well low and behold moments later 16T would stall at Coling blocking the whole line. Meanwhile 15T was in front of these guys with instructions to take the siding at Buena Vista to see 16T. 16T would get it moving down at Coling roughly 2 hours later, which means this 11Z wouldn't pass another signal after this one at Pkin for another 4 hours.

I'd been sitting on the beach at Saadani, north of Dar, Tanzania, as this remarkable weather front approached. Twenty minutes later... the deluge descended!

Trailing a dark, drifting plume, the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad's light Consolidation #40 slows to yard speed as she approaches Lahaska Station with a 3-car excursion consist on the Fourth of July weekend in 2009. New Hope's tourist runs typically terminate at Lahaska, where a run-around occurs and the trip back to New Hope features the engine running in revers on the point of the consist. The New Hope & Ivyland has tracks well beyond Lahaska.....all the way to Ivyland, in fact, but they are used only for longer distance excursions and special events, such as charters.

A fishing boat returns to the boat launch in advance of an approaching storm off the coast of Arniston, South Africa. To me, this had the look and feel of a scene one of my favorite painters, JMW Turner would have painted. In fact, he did paint a scene very similar to this, and I was thinking of him as I framed this. Arniston is a small seaside settlement in the Overberg region on the Cape South coast, close to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. Fishing is still an important means of earning a livelihood. The village has an historic section of old fishermen's cottages. Cape Agulhas is where the Atlantic and Indian Ocean collide. It also is a breeding ground for great white sharks.

It was a day filled with squalls and wind. The sky had cleared briefly while we were near the Newborough Forest in Anglesey, Wales. Massive thunderheads boiled up over the horizon, and we decided "it's time to go!"

The rain started to pour about five minutes after we got in the car and did not stop for an hour and a half -- wise decision to leave!
