Statue of Apollo, pentelic marble.

Found in Athens at the theater of Dionysos. Known as the "Omphalos Apollo", it was named after a base in the shape of omphalos, with which it was orginally associated. Work of the 2nd century AD, copying a bronze original sculpted in 460-450 BC, by a competent sculpture of the Severe style, possibly Kalamis.

As my morning coffee brewed, I slipped on my shoes and jacket, grabbed the Nikon, and headed out the door to see what the moon was looking like.

I'm no astronomer, but as near as I can tell, X marks the approximate spot where the Apollo 12 Lunar Landing Module set down on November 19, 1969. The landing area is known as Oceanus Procellarum, or the "Ocean of Storms". And it seems the flag that was set that day is still standing today, just short of 55 years later.

I just found that interesting.

Image was cropped only, as well as adding the flag and text in post processing. No other editing to the image was done.

A fountain (the Swans Fountain) already existed her from 1636, under the reign of Louis XIII, which Louis XIV decorated with the impressive and celebrated group in gilded lead representing Apollo on his chariot. The work of Tuby, after a drawing by Le Brun, it is inspired by the legend of Apollo, the Sun gold and emblem of the king. Tuby produced this monumental group between 1668 and 1670 at the Manufacture des Gobelins, and it was then transported to Versailles and installed and gilded the following year.

Original photo is by NASA and is found online at Lunar Atlas site of the Lunar and Planetary Institute, Houston Texas. Their description provided of sample 65326 is as follows:

Moderately coherent cataclastic anorthosite; has a "bronze colored" streak.

I enhanced the original poor quality photo to bring out the details of the specimen. the bronze streak is same as in my specimens.

Apollo 16 (April 16 – 27, 1972) was the tenth crewed mission in the United States Apollo space program, administered by NASA, and the fifth and next-to-last to land on the Moon. It was the second of Apollo's "J missions", with an extended stay on the lunar surface, a focus on science, and the use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV).

The mission was crewed by Commander John Young, Lunar Module Pilot Charles Duke and Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly. Launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on April 16, 1972, Apollo 16 experienced a number of minor glitches en route to the Moon. These culminated with a problem with the spaceship's main engine that resulted in a six-hour delay in the Moon landing as NASA managers contemplated having the astronauts abort the mission and return to Earth, before deciding the problem could be overcome. Although they permitted the lunar landing, NASA had the astronauts return from the mission one day earlier than planned.

Tom R. Chambers edited/enhanced Apollo images and provided text to produce a series for classroom teaching. It is in book and slide show format. Images and text courtesy of NASA.

Chambers was a research analyst at the Lunar Receiving Laboratory during Project Apollo, 1969-1972.

All shot on a camera that fits my pocket. I am holding the camera at arms length above my head and at approx half the zoom range with the most difficult lighting you can get! This little babe is a true performer. Who said you need a big expensive camera :-))
