The first of a pair of British Army WAH64D Apache attack helicopters departs, while the other sits and waits to be fuelled and serviced at the Forward Arming and Refuelling Point (FARP) on Salisbury Plain on a Pre-deployment exercise. The Apache is a key capability to the British Army providing close support to forces on the ground, as well as a pair of eyes in the sky keeping an over watch on the surrounding terrain .
A not too common sight over Cwmbran, an Augusta Westland AH1 Apache Longbow attack helicopter, heading north-west, possibly to the Sennybridge Training Area. The bulbous radar above the rotors is the Longbow radar which enables the helicopter to hover behind cover whilst acquiring targets, exposing only the radar.
The Apache Longbow has been in service since 2005, replacing the Westland Lynx AH7 attack helicopter.
On the tips of the wing stubs are the tubes for the CRV7 (Canadian Rocket Vehicle 7) air to surface missiles. On the port stub is also either a drop fuel tank or some sort of munition. Protruding under the nose is a 30mm chain gun (cannon).

Originally, the Apache started life as the Model 77 developed by Hughes Helicopters for the United States Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter program to replace the AH-1 Cobra, and was first flown on 30 September 1975. The AH-64 was introduced to U.S. Army service in April 1986
This Apache helicopter is based in South Carolina and is a refreshing change from the olive drab paint scheme. Helicopter stopped over night at Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport, GA.

Jorge is singing and drumming a "prayer song" for his family. He also told me his Apache name but I didn't write it down. Quite a surprise to hear and see him way up there on what is usually a very quiet location. A very pleasant surprise!

As an older restoration done a decade or more ago, the original inline six and column shifted 3 speed was replaced with a newer 350 V8 and turbo 400 automatic.
he AH-64 Apache is a four-blade, twin-engine attack helicopter with reverse-tricycle landing gear, and tandem cockpit for a crew of two. The Apache was developed as Model 77 by Hughes Helicopters for the United States Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter program to replace the AH-1 Cobra. First flown on 1 October 1975, the AH-64 features a nose-mounted sensor suite for target acquisition and night vision systems. The Apache is armed with a 30 mm M230 Chain Gun carried between the main landing gear, under the aircraft's belly. The AH-64 also carries a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire and Hydra 70 rocket pods on four hardpoints mounted on stub-wing pylons. The AH-64 also features double- and triple-redundant aircraft systems to improve survivability for the aircraft and crew in combat, as well as improved crash survivability for the pilots. .

Impressive display by the crew of this Apache Helicopter at all sorts of angles, fairly pleased with this image that has some nice clarity despite being shot at low shutter speed.
