A highlight of the 2015 summer season in England was the demonstration of manoeuvrability, and appearance at Airshows, of these two AgustaWestland AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters of the British Army Air Corps.
Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow
For well over a decade, the spearhead of Army Air Corps striking power has been the Apache AH1, built for British service by what is now AgustaWestland at Yeovil. This mighty 'tank-killing' attack helicopter, which won its US Army spurs in the first Gulf War, has seen extensive Army Air Corps use in combat theatres, specifically Afghanistan and Libya. Its main armament comprises 2.75in CRV-7 rockets, Hellfire missiles (of which it can carry up to 16), and the 30mm M230 chain gun, the latter directed by the pilot's helmet. The variant is easily distinguished by the Longbow fire control radar mounted atop the rotor head. Apaches from two operational regiments based at Wattisham in Suffolk form part of 16 Air Assault Brigade, a potent 'rapid response' unit that combines the employment of airborne forces and attack helicopters. Wattisham's 3 Regiment provides the Apache display for 2015, which has been increased from a solo to a two-ship, accompanied once again by spectacular pyrotechnics as part of an operational-type scenario.

this is one i was dreading...for so many reasons. with the context of the near genocide of the native people on my continent, and their continued marginalization, this one seemed particularly disturbing. other loteria cards featuring people deal with aspects of their behavior or endeavors...the drunk, the artist, the musician. but this is just "the indian". like "the deer" or "the frog". the generalization strips the person of their humanity and reduces them to less than a stereotype, more like a genus.
the other aspect that is troubling is that, in the course of wiping them from the face of what was for 10s of 1000 of years their land, we have also iconized them. the stoic, strong, proud indian. we name our sports teams "the braves", "the redskins", "the warriors". nostalgia in its most insidious form,... a fond remembrance of a time that never was. it allows us, the non-natives, to feel humbled by their passing...as though we were not the cause of it.
so... unlike my other work, i chose to make this one political, not spiritual, metaphysical, or psychological. the images i chose to use were taken this winter in new hampshire. the statue stands on an island near the shore of lake winnipesaukee (a native american name of course) while the flag flies over the town hall not more than 1/10 mile away. having appropriated their land and their name we fly our colors and erect statues to celebrate their contribution to our history. as if that could ever make amends.
what are loteria cards? many other examples.

There were a few of these Apache helicopters sitting on the shore. As we passed, one of them was idling. Just as we cleared enough room for it to go, it took off and flew right behind our boat.
