We went to Rottnest Island yesterday with the family. Home to a resident and very tame population of Quokkas, there are also some good birds there.
I captured this Common Merganser at Spenard Crossing in Anchorage. It's the first I've seen mergansers since May so they must be passing through for the winter. This one had some vegetation on its beak from fishing in the lake.
I thought this was a red-breasted merganser but the bird ID group says it's a common, possibly a first year, so sex can't be determined. So much to learn!

I've heard the Pinkies coming over the house the last couple of nights but these are the first I've been able to photograph
This is the castle on the island in Loch Leven where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned 1567-8. She did however escape, but her freedom was not long, fleeing to England in the hope that her cousin Elizabeth would aid her, she was eventually imprisoned there too for nearly 20 years before being executed at Fotheringay Castle in 1587. The area around the loch is an important wintering and stagin area for Pink-footed Geese and here some fly over the castle
Mute Swan, Order Anseriformes, Family Anatidae, Species Cygnus olor,..
A large, familiar bird, strikingly white and obvious even at great range, Mute Swan is generally quite tame, even semi-domesticated in its behaviour and choice of habitat.
Territorial pairs are aggressive, even to people or their dogs, using impressive displays of arched wings and loud, hissing calls.
In some floodplains, small groups regularly feed on dry land, a habit that is more consistent with the two " wild swans ", Bewick's and Whooper,
Voice - Strangled trumpeting and hissing notes,
Nesting - Huge pile of vegetation at water's edge; up to 8 eggs; 1 brood; March - June.
Feeding - Plucks vegetable matter from short grass in fields and salt marshes, pulls the same from shallow water, or upends in deeper water,..
Length 1.4 - 1.6m,
Wingspan - 2,08 - 2.38m,
Weight - 10 - 12kg,
Lifespan - 15 - 20 years,
Social - Small flocks,
Status - Secure,...
Another closeup! Here I'd like to point out the lamellae - comb-like structures along the inside of the bill that act like sieves and look like teeth. I noticed these more on the shovelers but a lot of ducks have them. And with the big bill that northern shovelers have, it's easier to see them!

Hooded Mergansers can dive for up to two minutes and use their excellent underwater vision to hunt. They have mechanisms like a nictitating membrane to protect their eyes underwater and can adjust the shape of their eyes to correct for light refraction.

The Muscovy Duck is a large duck which is native to Mexico and Central and South America. A small wild population reaches into the United States in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. There also are feral breeding populations in North America in and around public parks in nearly every state of the USA and in the Canadian provinces; feral populations also exist in Europe.
I was actually in the New Forest photgraphing some Birds of Prey but I became somewhat distracted by the lovely Canada Geese Goslings. Judging by the fact that they couldn't stand up in the breeze very well and the state of their coats I would say they were extremely young.
RS, Brazil.
This large South American waterfowl breeds from southern Chile and central Argentina down to Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands. During winter, it migrates north to central Chile, northern Argentina, Uruguay, and southeastern Brazil.
Males weigh between 3.8 and 5.4 kg, and females between 3.2 and 4.5 kg. Their length ranges from 87.5 to 115 cm, with a wingspan of 155 to 160 cm.
Mostly white, they have black tips on the outer six primary feathers - though these are often barely visible when the wings are closed. Their bill, legs, and feet are bright red.

Young swans landing on ice. Most undignified when it happened (unfortunately out of shot) - a lot of slithering and sliding when the brakes didn't work
This American Wigeon drake was giving me some nice looks as I sat patiently at Spenard Crossing in Anchorage - taken back in June of this year. I've found this to be an excellent place in Anchorage to find many duck species.

Another image from the earlier this year, taken in Cambridge, Maryland on the Choptank River. I learned a lot about this ducks behavior in a mixed flock and this is definitely an aggressive animal!

Pato Cuchareta, Northern Shoveler / Spatula clypeata (Rnc) (M)
The northern shoveler (/ˈʃʌvələr/; Spatula clypeata), known simply in Britain as the shoveler, is a common and widespread duck. It breeds in northern areas of Europe and Asia and across most of North America
This species is unmistakable in the northern hemisphere due to its large spatulate bill. The breeding drake has an iridescent dark green head
This species is unmistakable in the northern hemisphere due to its large spatulate bill. The breeding drake has an iridescent dark green head
Northern shovelers feed by dabbling for plant food, often by swinging its bill from side to side and using the bill to strain food from the water. They use their highly specialized bill (from which their name is derived) to forage for aquatic invertebrates – a carnivorous diet.
