This little duckling was building up quite a bow wave.

Despite the female-like chestnut head this is a young male. Black feathers starting to appear on the back and some dark feathers appearing under the chestnut ones on the head, especially noticeable at the junction with the white underparts on the neck. This bird was hatched last year and will almost certainly not breed this year.

The gadwall is a very grey-coloured dabbling duck, a little smaller than the mallard, and with an obvious black rear end. It shows a white wing patch in flight. When seen close up the grey colour is made up of exquisitely fine barring and speckling. It nests in low numbers in the UK and is an Amber List species. What they eat: Stems, leaves and seeds (Courtesy RSPB).

The male and female Goosanders (Common Mergansers) look very similar in winter plumage, both being "redheads". This bird, photographed in April, still maintains a red head but the presence of a pale stripe on the lores indicates that it is a first-year bird

Fairly large duck with extensive range across Northern Hemisphere. Males are mostly gray with a black rear end and puffy head. Also look for small white wing patch in flight. Females are similar to Mallard, but note thinner bill, plainer face, orange line along the edge of the bill, and white wing patch in flight. Typically found in pairs or small flocks in shallow wetlands, ponds, or bays, sometimes mixed with other species of ducks. (eBird)

The Gadwall was standing on the edge of the lake, just enjoying the sun and the pleasant temperatures of the day. He had this little spot all to himself when we saw him.

Came across this nest quite by accident and found 2 new born cygnets and 2 eggs yet to hatch. I was on the bank far enough away not to disturb them. The cygnet still has its egg tooth.

A very tame and photogenic bird

A Mute Swan on the charge. Even as early as February, testosterone levels start rising and aggression and territorialty start ramping up, chasing off rivals and generally showing off

Even in February these Goldeneye had paired off

This one showing purple iridescence. Sometimes they show green. As the colour is produced by feather structure rather than pigment, this is due to the angle of the light

A territorial male Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) taking exception to this Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) passing through a channel in the Grindstone Marsh. The swan was busy foraging with it's head underwater when the blackbird decided it was time to make the attack. Seen in the Hendrie Valley Sanctuary, Royal Botanical Gardens, Burlington, Ontario.

Yes, its a only a goose some might say, but in Hawaii this is an incredibly important bird. There are signs for its protection all over the place and epecially as you drive on roads in areas they frequent. It's great that they are getting so much attention but sad that they have become so vulnerable.

The nene, also known as nēnē and Hawaiian goose, is a species of bird endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. The official bird of the state of Hawaiʻi, the nene is exclusively found in the wild on the islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauaʻi, Molokai, and Hawaiʻi. The Hawaiian name nēnē comes from its soft call.

The colours on these lovely ducks are absolutley amazing.

Medium-sized dark whistling-duck with cream-colored flank plumes. Unlike Plumed Whistling-Duck, these plumes do not stick out and appear painted on the flanks. Often in smaller flocks around lakes, ponds, and dams. As the name suggests, note whistling call. (eBird)

This Canadian Goose gosling was having trouble finding its feet so I'm guessing it must have only recently been born.

First time I had seen Eider flying. You wait all this time and like buses 3 come along together :-).

A goose that was introduced into Europe in the 17th century that is often over looked all for the sake for being something that is classed as common, look a little closer and there is always beauty in everything. This goose has be known to have a lifespan of 10 to 24 years in the wild and tends to favour semi-urban or man made habitats.
