A few weeks ago, I wrote a column spotlighting several comic books I thought would be of interest. I’d like to again briefly draw your attention to a handful of intriguing new titles.
Caliber Press likes to take chances, producing books that hold little promise of generating large sales. It is one of the few that will release a Western comic. Their newest effort is called “Bounty”, a series that features two separate stories in each issue. The stories stick to familiar formulas, but are supported by strong art and should satisfy fans of the Old West.
True art lovers will enjoy “The Book of the Apocrypha”. Like Caliber’s earlier “Book of Genesis”, this contains short passages from the apocryphal books of the Old Testament, accompanied by the beautiful illustrations of Gustave Dore. Help in reproducing this artwork came from a photographic service in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“Siege of the Alamo” condenses the events of those historic “13 Days of Glory” into a single issue of story and art, and does a fine job of it. It also presents biographical profiles of Crockett, Bowie, and Travis, as well as explaining events preceding and following this epic battle.
The Alamo book is also published by Caliber, as is “Song of the Cid”, a two issue series dealing with the famous medieval Spanish hero. These are the kinds of comics that can be read and enjoyed by adults, while also making a fine supplementary teaching tool for children.
Fans of the “National Enquirer” school of journalism might enjoy “Conspiracy Comics” (published by Revolutionary Comics). The first issue of this series focuses on the still murky circumstances surrounding the death of screen legend Marilyn Monroe. It and all of the titles covered in this column are available in comic book specialty stores.
