Onnetō Lake is a part of Akan National Park in Ashoro, Hokkaido. "Onneto" means old pond or big pond in the aboriginal Ainu language. The lake with a circumference of 2.5 km was created when the river was dammed up due to the volcanic eruption of Mt. Meakan-dake. Due to high acidity levels, fish can’t live in the lake but ezo salamander and crawfish can.
Since the surface of Lake Onneto beautifully changes color from light blue to green and dark blue, depending on the time of day or the season, the lake is also called Goshikinuma. Along with Okotanpe Lake and Shinonome Lake, the lake is considered one of the three major mystery lakes in Hokkaido. Lake Onnetō (オンネトー), from the Ainu onne (ancient) and to (lake), is a freshwater lake near Ashoro in Akan National Park, Hokkaidō, Japan.

With wheelchair accessibility in much of the site, it’s a great spot to stop and take in the view along the Trans-Canada Trail System. Capture stunning photos of High Falls and the smaller Little High Falls, following hiking trail signs to discover both. However, always exercise caution and prioritize safety when exploring near the rushing waterfalls and rocky surfaces.
