Alpine Chough, juvenile?, Untersberg Mountain, Berchtesgaden Alps, SW of Salzburg, border of Austria and Germany, 14 Jul 2014.

These birds were common on Untersberg Mountain, and, at least in this case, easily approached. I saw them at Col du Galibier in France as well, but not so closely... My kind of bird photography, no big lenses required!

The Alpine Chough (Scientific name: Pyrrhocorax graculus) also known as Yellow billed Chough is a hardy bird that calls the highly uninhabitable peaks of the Alps, its home. The bird literally thrives at the Top Of Europe. This particular specimen was photographed at Jungfrau, Switzerland, the highest mountain peak (4,158m) in Europe.

The conditions can get very harsh in winter. When I had been there earlier this month, the temperatures was as low as -20°C with wind speeds of up to 32km/h. That makes the wind chill factor a bone biting -39°C! This can worsen with strong and frequent blizzards that can easily sweep away a precarious person.

Astonishingly, the bird can tackle even these conditions. It can hover, duck, dive, cruise and check out the visitors venturing out of the Sphinx Observation Terrace at Jungfrau. Supposedly, the bird eats anything from garbage, spiders, insects to smaller mammals, birds and fruits. But having seen the kind of conditions up there, it becomes an intriguing question, considering the kind of flora and fauna that can barely survive let alone sustain a food chain.

This picture was shot in a mostly white environment. Thus, I had to spend very little time getting rid of the residual non-white portions. Please view it Large On White to appreciate the details. This is by far the coldest temperature I have subjected my camera and lens to. And, I think I just love Ornithology.
