After so many bright colors that I have shown here in the last few days, I can allow myself to add a somewhat gloomy picture (from February this year) without the whole mood changing. It doesn't tip over for me anyway because, on the one hand, it's my favorite place on the small Winterberg in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, which I'm fascinated by in all weathers, and on the other hand, I'm just about to pack my suitcase. Because tomorrow I'm going on a photo tour east for two weeks.
As the title suggests, this photo was taken in a 30 minute break between two rain showers. They made sure that there wasn't much (or nothing) of the sunrise that I actually came up here to see. At the same time, however, an extraordinary atmosphere was created that makes this picture one of my favorites from here.
And since I've photographed this tree about fifteen times now, that's saying something.

Exterior wood window shutters over the course of history were not only aesthetically pleasing but provided a necessary function with their many uses.
They were used for security, provided privacy from outsiders passing by, added an extra layer of insulation during winter weather (with wood having a high R value) and blocked out the sun, preventing damage to furniture.
Louvered shutters allowed a breeze to enter a home, keeping the room cool on a hot summer day.
Earlier historic shutters were used for security in place of glass windows.
Shutters were either single board, or board-and-batten shutters (vertical wood slats) which were used on cottages and primitive buildings.
Solid raised paneled shutters then appeared and provided a lighter, more elegant look.
Fixed louvered shutters then came into use during the second half of the 18th century.
Historically, solid raised panel shutters were referred to as “shutters” while those with louvered shutters were called “blinds”.
I can't resist allowing just one rosebay willowherb to flower in our garden but have to remember to pick it before seeds start to ripen.

Short-eared Owl coming in hot! Quite possibly the best day ever! Hopefully we can repeat it again someday!
RKO_3744. How wonderful to meet with this young lion cub, obviously waiting for its mother to return. The curious cub looked straight towards me allowing for a wonderful portrait shot.
Somehow the image tells me it's looking at the television screen in front of him watching a movie and looking at some strange animals carrying metal tubes......😏

Machu Picchu 20221127
Machu Picchu not only offers the visitor the view of the temples and stone houses that are on its cusp, but also gives a look of its terraces and irrigation systems, which give a unique personality to the Incan citadel and its surroundings.
The Functions of the Platforms
These constructions are wide steps built on the mountains’s slopes that allowed the Incas to gain land in order to develop agriculture adapted to the landscape.
Without a doubt, creating great steps meant a great effort, but without these, the constant rains, the humidity of the environment and the steepness of the area would have triggered large landslides that would have destroyed the ruins of Machu Picchu.
This terrace system fulfills three main functions:
Containment: These constructions prevented the land’s erosion from creating landslides when carrying out the construction of cities, houses and temples.
Agriculture: Through the construction of these platforms, the Incas expanded the amount of land used for agricultural activity. These terraces allowed to take advantage of the rainwater as a source of crop irrigation directly from channels that connected each of the levels. Nowadays, crops are not cultivated anymore to maintain their integrity, due to the condition of World Heritage of Machu Picchu.
Ceremonial centers: these finer and more extensive construction platforms were intended to decorate ceremonial and/or administrative centers.
Feel sorry for the youth of today. When I was young this place would be packed with people swimming and water skiing. The result of living in a society that does not take responsibility for their own actions. Something happens because you did something sue the city or town. This is what happens.

I'd like to think that these two are friends, sitting in the sun, just sharing a moment. The pansy was leaned way out from its dirt home, resting on the concrete edge. The acorn cap, one can only wonder where he came from. Delivered by a squirrel perhaps? ♥
A look inside the window of a scanning tunnelling microscope - a scientific instrument which allows for atomic-scale imaging and electronic characterisation of materials. The inventors of this microscope, Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer, won a Nobel Prize for their work in 1986. Today, it is widely used in research labs all over the world.
The image shows a stainless steel ultra-high vacuum chamber which is cooled by cryogenic liquids - allowing for a highly controlled environment for measurements. The long rod in the lower part of the image is used to move samples within the vacuum chamber. Through the main window a small cylindrical probe which raster scans across the surface to produce images can be seen pointing upwards, while a sample of interest mounted on a rectangular plate points downwards. The view into the microscope capable of precise imaging offers a "window to the nanoscale."
I have been fascinated for some time by the diversity of texture and form of the plants that grow on the roadside verges.
The problem for image creation is that all the leaves are green. However, with the latest selection tools in Photoshop it is possible to select individual leaves and treat them differently,
I am currently trying two approaches: black and white which emphasises texture; and, colour.
This is one of my first attempts using colour. I think the use of colour should allow me to illustrate the competitive nature of the enviornment.
Mild winter weather allowed some people to take their boats out on the first day of the year ( January 1st 2025 )
Pitt Lake is the second-largest lake in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. About 53.5 square kilometres in area, it is about 25 km long and about 4.5 km wide at its widest. It is one of the world's relatively few tidal lakes, and among the largest. In Pitt Lake, there is on average a three foot tide range; thus Pitt Lake is separated from sea level and tidal waters during most hours of each day during the 15 foot tide cycle of the Pitt River and Strait of Georgia estuary immediately downstream. The lake's southern tip is 20 km upstream from The Pitt River confluence with the Fraser River and is 40 km east of Downtown Vancouver.
Pitt Lake is in a typical U-shaped glacial valley in the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains. The overdeepening of the lower end of the valley over the span of the Wisconsin glaciation created a trough over 140 m below current sea level. After initial glacial retreat at around 13,000 years ago a saltwater fjord occupied this basin when relative sea levels were still ca 120 to 140m above current levels in the region. Unlike neighbouring Indian Arm and Howe Sound farther west, this fjord basin became partly cut off from tidal waters by sedimentation of the lower Fraser River ca 10,500 years ago, and Pitt Lake is now considered a tidal fjord lake.
Pitt Lake is the second largest of a series of north-south oriented fjord-lakes incising the southern slopes of the Pacific Ranges, the largest being Harrison Lake located 60 km to the east. The other fjord-lakes include Coquitlam Lake, Alouette Lake, Stave Lake, and Chehalis Lake.
The Pitt River drains into the northern end of Pitt Lake. The western shore of Pitt Lake are protected within Pinecone Burke Provincial Park, while most of the eastern shore are protected within Golden Ears Provincial Park. The southern end of Pitt Lake features an extensive marshland called Pitt Polder. While most of this marshland has since been drained for agricultural use, the northernmost portion is strictly protected in order to provide critical habitat for migratory birds.
Communities
The community of Pitt Meadows and the First Nations reserve of Pitt Lake Indian Reserve 5 are located at the southern end of the lake. Just southwest of the lake is the community of Port Coquitlam, which is across the Pitt River from Pitt Meadows. At the north end of the lake is a locality named Alvin, which is a transport and shipping point for logging companies and their employees.

The moment I saw you I knew my life would never be the same again. At the time, I didn't know what that actually meant.
It was only over time that I realized what a gift, what an enrichment you are for my life. That there is a person who means more to me than anything else. It still overwhelms me when I think back to your first hour in the world, which I was allowed to spend with you. Okay, most of the time you were yelling at me, but since then, at least that's how it feels to me, something special connects us.
And now look at you, 18 years later. This little baby whose feet were smaller than my thumb has grown into a beautiful young woman.
A young woman with personality, with rough edges, with a lot of empathy and humor. It fills me with great pride to see you like this today.
I am very happy to have you in my life and that I was able to accompany you on your way to here and that I can continue to do so.
For your further journey, which is called life, I wish you much success and happiness and all the best. At the same time, I wish you the strength and self-confidence to overcome setbacks and defeats. I am excited to see where your journey will take you and i will always be there for you if you need me.

Cabbage White (Pieris rapae)
Feasting on a Gazania, so intent on feeding it allowed me in very close.
The waves in Long Island sound are small and lifeless... they dont make for much drama in the long exposure department. However, they do allow for some cool geometric shots and they do allow for the texture of the sand to show through, so I tried to capitalize on that. I like the color contrast with the water and the pier. I used a circular polarizer to get the ripples in the sand to show through the water to nice effect. Overall, I am actually quite pleased with the shot.
Let me know what you think. Enjoy :)
Black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus).
Stilts are generally very protective parents in the breeding season - patience and a quiet well screened hide allowed me to get some shots without alarming them.

Yesterday I was allowed to take the 50mm 2.8 Xenar with me to take some flowers. The changing light sometimes resulted in pictures with a watercolor look. Shot with aperture f4.0 + 11mm extension tube.

As you can imagine, I snapped a bunch of quick shots hoping at least one of them would be in focus.

We hopped on our chopper and headed out of Milford Sound which allowed us to see first hand the majesty of this magnificent natural wonder. With sheer walls towering 1,200 meters or 3,900 feet and plunging to the depths of near 1000 feet or 291 meters it's no wonder that Rudyard Kipling once call the sound the 8th wonder of the world. We will be back!

This is a Fruit bat. Really large in comparison to the bats I've seen around.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
This adorable little bird stayed there in the big Gesse for a good quarter of an hour looking for its pittance, which is mainly made up of insects, which allowed me to take a good series of photos.

A butterfly decided to stop by and chill with us for a good 20 minutes and allowed us to take many pictures of it. Might’ve been hit by the altitude too
I came here to Bruges to visit a relic of the holy blood of Jesus Christ. I learned that it existed a few months prior to coming. This is the upper chapel in the basilica of the holy blood. Cameras aren’t allowed but I managed a few stealth shots.
The garden cooled a touch in the evening to allow the bees to get out. It was a hot day today and it will be hotter tomorrow.
Frankendael Park is part of the grounds of a manor established in the seventeenth century. These manors allowed wealthy denizens of Amsterdam to escape from the stench and discomforts of the city. This particular grand house and park is the only one to survive into our time. And it is today an oasis of rest in any kind of weather (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/28255388044/in/photoli...). I like to come to its calm. Today I was surprised to find this colorful lily in all this green. It's a gorgeous so-called goliath Orienpet Lily, a cultivar combinng Oriental and Trumpet Lily. Who Robert Swanson is I don't know.
Soo Line train 214, powered by lone EMD SD60M No. 6061, waits for a signal at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on November 27, 1992. Passing by on the main line is Amtrak train 338 to Chicago, substituted with Chicago Metra commuter equipment. For several years in the early 1990’s, Amtrak would borrow some equipment from Metra to substitute on the Chicago to Milwaukee “Hiawatha” corridor during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. This would allow Amtrak to move equipment normally used on the run to expand capacity on other trains to handle increased holiday ridership.
