Alignment, of place and time, is...hard to come by, hard to plan, hard to live by. But when it comes around, sets you back in that delusional state of mind that pursues dreams.

These images are from two very similar projects that I've just helped my friends with. They want to be able to hold bike frames on their alignment tables by the head tube. They both purchased used bench centers, and we had to make bull nose centers for them.
The fit up needed to be very close, so we were working to within a few tenths.
The other complication was that one of the centers on each set was spring loaded and utilized a rack and pinion to withdraw it... so we had to mill those rack gears.

The primary purpose of this project is to replace the bridge and necessary approaches on Route 711 (Tardy Mountain Road) bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad.
The existing bridge is a single lane structure with reduced roadway width and an 8-ton weight restriction. The proposed bridge will be a two-lane truss bridges on the same alignment with slight improvements to the alignment toward Route 682 (Leesville Road). This arrangement of rocks on the Otsukinami Coast beach is quite temporary. The waves here even on this fairly still morning were powerful enough to roll another boulder over my foot while I was capturing a scene. Should I go back in a few days, I will surely find the rocks have been moved.
Each of the pointed corners is aligned with the one below it... All the corners form a straight line!

The Northern Lights, also know as the Aurora Borealis, are often associated with winter since the nights tend to be longer during that time of year allowing for their visibility. Although always present somewhere nearer Earth's magnetic poles at any time of year, they are driven by activity on the Sun and tend to follow along with the Sun's 11 year activity cycle; and due to the alignment of the Earth's tilt relative to the Sun, if conditions are right, they are more likely to occur around the times of the equinoxes (Russell-McPherron effect). Prior to humans understanding the actually cause, electrically charged particles from the Sun exciting the gasses in Earth's atmosphere causing them to emit light somewhat akin to a neon light tube, historically many folks erroneously thought they might be caused by sunlight reflected off the the polar caps.
Regardless of when they occur, a strong display of the Northern Lights can be absolutely mesmerizing ! One of the largest display in recent memory was visible here 20 years and covered the sky for horizon-to-horizon, lasting two days at my home here in upstate, NY and subsequently becoming known as 'The Great Halloween Solar Storms Of 2003' with sightings as far south as California, Texas & Florida. Driven by a series of solar flares, including the most powerful ever recorded, it overloaded the sensors and 'buried the needles' which cut-out at X17 - the flare was later estimated to be about X45 !
Having been imaging the aurora for many decades now; at times, including the above mentioned 2003 event, I have been fortunate to witness displays that covered the entire sky with ever-changing hues rarely seen in nature and bright curtains of light rippling through our atmosphere. Shown in the composite at the attached link are examples I have shot over the years, with most taken from my home here in upstate, NY but with others from Cherry Springs State Park in central Pennsylvania in 2002 and at Stellafane in central Vermont in 1991. Certain folks may actually recognize many of these images as I was fortunate to enjoy several of these display with some of my family and friends.
As people around the world create their own light displays inside and outside their homes at this time if year, may their brilliance warm your heart with love and fill your soul with joy !

On June 24, 2022 around 4:20am, a rare planetary alignment occurred in the night sky. I went to our local park to see if I could capture this moment. Here's a short video describing the four-photo panorama I created from that morning.
From left to right, Mercury, Venus, crescent moon, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn all aligned themselves!
The title is alignment all the way to the left. The two rows are aligned to the left, so it has the 'pleasant-look'.

even though I have a jig I still use 5 pins. to make sure I hit the set up dead on when tacking. its cuz I prefer to tack on the table where i know the alignment is dead on rather than in the jig. someday I'll get a better jig I have more faith in but for now its two in the head tube two on the bb and one on the seat tube

Photo taken from from a one-time railway photographer's favourite spot - close to one parapet of the bridge that carried the Midland rail line over Victoria Bridge Road, the alignment of which has already been lost to the redevelopment of this old industrial site.
