New D'Hanis, Texas. The town of D'Hanis was originally founded in the 1840's by Alsatian immigrants under the supervision of Henri Castro (of nearby Castroville). But in 1881, the railroad bypassed the town to the north -- so the residents of D'Hanis picked up and moved the center of town about a mile to the north and west to its current location. While the old town site is largely abandoned, New D'Hanis hangs on with a few hundred residents, kept alive the the constant traffic along Highway 90.
There is a small downtown with a handful of shops lining the highway and railroad, with the historic J. M. Koch hotel on the east end of town. To the south there is the St. Anthony's School, built in 1908. To the northwest of town, along the original highway alignment, is the D'Hanis Brick Works, still cranking out their trademark red brick (which can be found in buildings all over Texas) for over a hundred years.
This is just a quick description -- I'll write up a longer, more detailed description at a later date. Pictures taken February 20th and August 23rd, 2008.
