This Neoclassical structure was completed between 1861 and 1874, and is based on the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C. The west facade ends in projecting bays, and a portico projects from the center of the building. At the base of the portico, seven granite archways brace and support the porch above. Eight fluted Corinthian columns line the portico. A cornice supports the pediment above depicting Minerva surrounded by Education, Justice, and Mining. Above the flat roof with balustrade are two drums supporting a dome. The first drum consists of a colonnade of Corinthian columns; the second, Corinthian pilasters. Large arched windows line the drum walls. The dome is 64 m (210 ft) high, matching that of the U.S. Capitol, and supports a lantern with a smaller dome capped with a gold-leafed orbed finial. --(excerpt from Wikipedia Article)

Glen Canyon Park, San Francisco (10/22/2011)
The backlit Pampas Grass (Cortaderia selloana?) caught my eye (you can also see one across the canyon), and the rays of the rapidly falling sun were just a bonus (helped by the 041 Filter). I pretty much metered for the highlights and subtracted 2EV (placing the pampas grass plumes at zone 7) as I usually do for this B&W slide film. The amazing thing is that the canyon wall was very thin in the negative but is still scannable (and printable).

The East Entrance of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco with the early afternoon sun behind it.
Although it had a history dating back to the Gold Rush, the structure didn't survive the fire of the 1906 earthquake. Work began on this present structure in 1928. Designed in French Gothic style by Lewis P. Hobart, it was completed in 1964 as the third largest Episcopal cathedral in the United States.
