On the northeast slope of Gellért Hill stands a monument that pays tribute to Saint Gellért Sagredo, the 11th century bishop who tried to convert the Magyars to christianity.

Saint Gellért: In the early years of the 11th century, Gellért (Gerard in English), the Benedictine Abbot of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, was on his way to Palestine on a pilgrimage when he was detained by the country's King Stephen, who asked the bishop to stay and tutor his son Imre, and to help convert the pagan Magyars to christianity. Gellért agreed to take on the challenge and remained in the country for many years under the protection of the king. Several years after Stephen's death, in 1046, insurgents who wanted a return to paganism captured Gellért in Buda. According to legend, he was sent to his demise in a barrel pierced with nails and rolled down the steep hill. At the time the hill was known as Kelen-hegy (Eastern Hill), but is was later renamed Gellért-hegy in honor of the saint.

The Monument: In 1904 a monument was erected at the site where Gellért met his death. The statue of the bishop, designed by sculptor Gyula Jankovits, is framed by a neoclassical semi-circular colonnade. The twelve meter tall (39ft) statue shows Gellért victoriously holding aloft a crucifix. At his feet a wild-looking Magyar looks up towards the bishop as if standing in awe. Below the sculpture sits a pretty man-made waterfall. The best place from which to view the statue is from the Elizabeth Bridge. However, if you want a closer look, you can climb up to the bronze likeness of Bishop Gellért via a flight of steps that originate at the bridge. The monument can be seen from all over Budapest, especially at night when it is illuminated.

Sándor Petőfi (born Petrovics; Hungarian: Petőfi Sándor pronounced [ˈpɛtøːfi ˈʃaːndor ] Slovak: Alexander Petrovič; Serbian: Александар Петровић; 1 January 1823 – most likely 31 July 1849) was a Hungarian poet and liberal revolutionary. He is considered Hungary's national poet, and was one of the key figures of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. He is the author of the Nemzeti dal (National Song), which is said to have inspired the revolution in the Kingdom of Hungary that grew into a war for independence from the Austrian Empire. It is most likely that he died in the Battle of Segesvár, one of the last battles of the war.

In the background is The Hungarian Orthodox Church of Our Lady Wicha (Magyar ortodox templom). The inside of the church is quite unusual. It was built in the late 18th century and the interior is quite ornate, decorated in Baroque style but retaining a distinct Orthodox feel. The massive iconoclast that covers much of the eastern wall was painted by an artist from Vienna.

St. Stephen's Basilica (Hungarian: Szent István-bazilika) is a Roman Catholic basilica in Budapest, Hungary. It is named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975–1038), whose right hand is housed in the reliquary. It was the sixth largest church building in Hungary before 1920. Today, it is the third largest church building in present-day Hungary.

This is the most important church building in Hungary, one of the most significant tourist attractions and the third highest building in Hungary.

Equal with the Hungarian Parliament Building, it is one of the two tallest buildings in Budapest at 96 metres (315 ft) - this equation symbolises that worldly and spiritual thinking have the same importance. According to current regulations there cannot be taller building in Budapest than 96 metres (315 ft). It has a width of 55 metres (180 ft), and length of 87.4 metres (287 ft). It was completed in 1905 after 54 years of construction, according to the plans of Miklós Ybl, and was completed by József Kauser. Much of this delay can be attributed to the collapse of the dome in 1868 which required complete demolition of the completed works and rebuilding from the ground up.

The architectural style is Neo-Classical; it has a Greek cross ground plan. The façade is anchored by two large bell towers. In the southern tower is Hungary's biggest bell, weighing over 9 tonnes (8.9 long tons; 9.9 short tons). Its predecessor had a weight of almost 8 tonnes (7.9 long tons; 8.8 short tons), but it was used for military purposes during World War II. Visitors may access the dome by elevators or by climbing 364 stairs for a 360° view overlooking Budapest.

"Saints Peter and Paul Church on Washington Square in San Francisco. The first location of the church was on the corner of Filbert Street and Grant Avenue. The San Francisco fire and earthquake of 1906 razed this structure to the ground. The present church, with its twin spires that soar 191 feet into the sky, was completed in 1924.

The church is featured in the Clint Eastwood movies Dirty Harry and The Dead Pool and scenes from Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments were filmed at the church while it was under construction. After their civil ceremony in 1954, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio returned for photographs on the steps of this San Francisco church and DiMaggio's funeral was held here on March 11, 1999." --quoted from: www.photosofoldamerica.com/index.cfm/San_Francisco_Parks_...

"Coit Tower, also known as the Lillian Coit Memorial Tower, is a 210-foot (64 m) tower in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, California. The tower, in the city's Pioneer Park, was built in 1933 using Lillie Hitchcock Coit's bequest to beautify the city of San Francisco; at her death in 1929 Coit left one-third of her estate to the city for civic beautification. The tower was proposed in 1931 as an appropriate use of Coit's gift. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 29, 2008.[1]

The art deco tower, built of unpainted reinforced concrete, was designed by architects Arthur Brown, Jr. and Henry Howard, with fresco murals by 27 different on-site artists and their numerous assistants, plus two additional paintings installed after creation off-site. " -- quoted from: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coit_Tower

I like the contrast combination of the Dark Red filter with Scala, but since the Scala film is old and when it was new it was less sensitive in the red range than the usual panchromatic (is that why ortho films seem so sharp, I wonder?) the exposure is difficult to get perfect. I think I exposed this one pretty well, the highlight detail on the church didn't scan that well but will print well when properly burned in.

?? where would I have taken this?? hmmm...

My wife was on her way home when she got off the bus on Van Ness and saw this scene. She calls me with excitement and tells me to "bring the new camera" loaded with "that film you used for those foggy scenes in budapest" (here). What can I say? When she says it's time to burn some scala, it's time to burn some scala. It was the first time using scala in my newly acquired Mamiya 7.

The fountain at the junction of three roads (tre vie) marks the terminal point of the "modern" Acqua Vergine, the revived Aqua Virgo, one of the aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome. In 19 BC, supposedly with the help of a virgin, Roman technicians located a source of pure water some 13 km (8.1 mi) from the city. (This scene is presented on the present fountain's façade.) However, the eventual indirect route of the aqueduct made its length some 22 km (14 mi). This Aqua Virgo led the water into the Baths of Agrippa. It served Rome for more than 400 years.

The Trevi Fountain was finished in 1762 by Giuseppe Pannini, who substituted the present allegories for planned sculptures of Agrippa and "Trivia", the Roman virgin. It remains one of the most historical cultural landmarks in Rome. (from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trevi_Fountain)

Yes, We threw coins in the fountain with our right hands over our left shoulders. I guess we are bound to visit Rome again sometime....

I had walked much of the perimeter of both parks that afternoon and was starting to get a bit tired of lugging all my gear around (Backpack full of Hasselblad gear and a tripod in a sling bag). I took a short rest near this retaining wall and stood there for awhile, staring in this direction. The next thing I knew I was setting up the tripod and viewing the focusing screen and composing. Not sure which I liked better the high-contrast Scala or the lower contrast and glowy Efke IR image.

The Hungarian "Statue of Liberty" (Szabadság Szobor) has a very interesting history. First erected in 1947, in remembrance of the Soviet occupation of Hungary during World War II, which ended the occupation by Nazi Germany. The defeat of Axis forces by the Red Army was officially proclaimed “liberation”—leading to the original inscription upon the memorial (both in Hungarian and Russian) translated to read: 'To the memory of the liberating Soviet heroes [erected by] the grateful Hungarian people [in] 1945.' In following years, public sentiment toward the Soviets decreased to the point of revolution, which was attempted and temporarily succeeded in 1956 and subsequently damaged some portions of the monument. After the 1989 transition from communist rule to democracy, the inscription was modified to read (Translated from Hungarian) 'To the memory of those all who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom, and prosperity of Hungary.'

The monument was designed by Zsigmond Kisfaludi Stróbl. According to Kisfaludi Stróbl himself the design was originally made for the memorial of István Horthy and would in that role have featured a human child instead of the palm leaf that was a Soviet addition.
