...with a tragic ending.

Following the collapse of the communist regime in Hungary and the rest of eastern Europe, many statues - found in key squares and avenues around Budapest - were immediately removed, before being transferred to Memento Park.

Hungary's Communist Past: After World War II, in 1949, Hungary was declared a People's Republic. There was a Communist government and Socialism was declared as the main goal of the nation. A new coat-of-arms was adopted with Communist symbols like the red star, hammer and sickle. By 1950, the state controlled most of the economy, as all large and mid-sized industrial companies, plants, mines, banks of all kind as well as all companies of retail and foreign trade were nationalized without any compensation. Hungarian leaders had close ties to high-ranking Soviet leaders. Government became increasingly unpopular, leading finally to the 1956 Revolution.

From the 1960s to the late 1980s, much of the wartime damage to the city was finally repaired. New economic reforms were introduced, and a special form of Communism, the so-called "Goulash Communism", was born. The name stemmed from the idea that the ingredients for Communism were different in Hungary. As Hungary enjoyed many amenities not available to other communist countries, it was often satirically referred to as "The Happiest Barrack" within the Eastern bloc. With elements of free market and improved human rights record, it represented a deviation from the purely communist principles. Finally, this led to free elections and a democratic government in 1989. Hungary's transition to a Western-style democracy was one of the smoothest among the former Soviet bloc.

There is little written about this exhibit that is off to the side of the inside entrance in Memento Park. The relief that is lying down to the Side of what appears to be a bust of Lenin is of Soviet Soldiers and civilians shaking hands with Hungarian soldiers and civilians. The fact that the relief is lying down makes them look like dead bodies lying to the side of Lenin and that is the image that prompted this composition.

The fountain at the junction of three roads (tre vie) marks the terminal point of the "modern" Acqua Vergine, the revived Aqua Virgo, one of the aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome. In 19 BC, supposedly with the help of a virgin, Roman technicians located a source of pure water some 13 km (8.1 mi) from the city. (This scene is presented on the present fountain's façade.) However, the eventual indirect route of the aqueduct made its length some 22 km (14 mi). This Aqua Virgo led the water into the Baths of Agrippa. It served Rome for more than 400 years.

The Trevi Fountain was finished in 1762 by Giuseppe Pannini, who substituted the present allegories for planned sculptures of Agrippa and "Trivia", the Roman virgin. It remains one of the most historical cultural landmarks in Rome. (from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trevi_Fountain)

Yes, We threw coins in the fountain with our right hands over our left shoulders. I guess we are bound to visit Rome again sometime....

I had set out to do this. I looked up the moonrise time, found what I had thought was an interesting vantage point, etc. But this was the most successful image of the evening, and I knew as soon as I had metered it that I needed faster film. From what I remember the exposure was 15-30 seconds with the lens wide open, I guess I was lucky not to have any planes fly by, I wasn't so lucky about the tourist boat under the bridge. Oh well, at least nobody can accuse me of Photoshopping it! After the moon got too far above the horizon the difference in values between it and the city were too great. I may give this another try when the moon is at perigee next month. In any case it was an interesting end to an afternoon and evening of hiking around the Marin Headlands.

the roll of film popped out of an old bag that I used to drag around town during uni... didn't know what was in it and waited nearly 3 weeks to get it developed (curiosity got the best of me).

.. and ofcourse, the camera could only have ever been the old pentax k1000 ..

well.. not quite sure who those figures are in the distance, but most probably pre-Mama Maria and some guy..

based on one specific shot, this roll dates as far back as 1999!

St. Stephen's Basilica (Hungarian: Szent István-bazilika) is a Roman Catholic basilica in Budapest, Hungary. It is named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975–1038), whose right hand is housed in the reliquary. It was the sixth largest church building in Hungary before 1920. Today, it is the third largest church building in present-day Hungary.

This is the most important church building in Hungary, one of the most significant tourist attractions and the third highest building in Hungary.

Equal with the Hungarian Parliament Building, it is one of the two tallest buildings in Budapest at 96 metres (315 ft) - this equation symbolises that worldly and spiritual thinking have the same importance. According to current regulations there cannot be taller building in Budapest than 96 metres (315 ft). It has a width of 55 metres (180 ft), and length of 87.4 metres (287 ft). It was completed in 1905 after 54 years of construction, according to the plans of Miklós Ybl, and was completed by József Kauser. Much of this delay can be attributed to the collapse of the dome in 1868 which required complete demolition of the completed works and rebuilding from the ground up.

The architectural style is Neo-Classical; it has a Greek cross ground plan.

The Hungarian "Statue of Liberty" (Szabadság Szobor) has a very interesting history. First erected in 1947, in remembrance of the Soviet occupation of Hungary during World War II, which ended the occupation by Nazi Germany. The defeat of Axis forces by the Red Army was officially proclaimed “liberation”—leading to the original inscription upon the memorial (both in Hungarian and Russian) translated to read: 'To the memory of the liberating Soviet heroes [erected by] the grateful Hungarian people [in] 1945.' In following years, public sentiment toward the Soviets decreased to the point of revolution, which was attempted and temporarily succeeded in 1956 and subsequently damaged some portions of the monument. After the 1989 transition from communist rule to democracy, the inscription was modified to read (Translated from Hungarian) 'To the memory of those all who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom, and prosperity of Hungary.'

The monument was designed by Zsigmond Kisfaludi Stróbl. According to Kisfaludi Stróbl himself the design was originally made for the memorial of István Horthy and would in that role have featured a human child instead of the palm leaf that was a Soviet addition.

This exposure was faily long, as it was shot at dusk, which gave a nice back-lit glow that added even more drama to the composition.

The equestrian statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy stands on the Danube terrace, in a prominent position, high above Budapest. The Neo-Baroque statue was made by sculptor József Róna for the town of Zenta but the town could not afford its price. The monument was bought in 1900 as a temporary solution until the planned equestrian statue of King Franz Joseph was completed. This never happened so Prince Eugen remained on his plinth. This plinth is decorated by two bronze reliefs, showing the capture of the earth-works in Zenta and the decisive cavalry charge in the famous battle in 1697.

(from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Works_of_art_in_Buda_Castle#Sculptu... )

Shot at night, very well lit from below, the oxidation patterns of the bronze statue are quite visible and stark and some of the highlights from the marble are washed out. I mistakenly scanned this at 100Mpix+ and the detail that Scala offers in this image is incredible. Even the Bronze relief on the side of the base is faithfully rendered. This was a long exposure (on the order of 8-10 minutes) probably at f22, the softness at the base of the statue was due to people walking in and out of the scene as the entire square was very crowded.

One of several Russian Anti-Aircraft Guns placed at the Citadel atop Gellért Hill after they won the Siege of Budapest towards the end of World War II.

This was a very long exposure taken at dusk with no artificial lighting. Several people walked by right in front of the camera but weren't lit enough and weren't there long enough to even register on the film, It seems to have added to the contrast in the wall stones as well as the rendered the dark sand much lighter than it seemed at the time.

On the northeast slope of Gellért Hill stands a monument that pays tribute to Saint Gellért Sagredo, the 11th century bishop who tried to convert the Magyars to christianity.

Saint Gellért: In the early years of the 11th century, Gellért (Gerard in English), the Benedictine Abbot of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, was on his way to Palestine on a pilgrimage when he was detained by the country's King Stephen, who asked the bishop to stay and tutor his son Imre, and to help convert the pagan Magyars to christianity. Gellért agreed to take on the challenge and remained in the country for many years under the protection of the king. Several years after Stephen's death, in 1046, insurgents who wanted a return to paganism captured Gellért in Buda. According to legend, he was sent to his demise in a barrel pierced with nails and rolled down the steep hill. At the time the hill was known as Kelen-hegy (Eastern Hill), but is was later renamed Gellért-hegy in honor of the saint.

The Monument: In 1904 a monument was erected at the site where Gellért met his death. The statue of the bishop, designed by sculptor Gyula Jankovits, is framed by a neoclassical semi-circular colonnade. The twelve meter tall (39ft) statue shows Gellért victoriously holding aloft a crucifix. At his feet a wild-looking Magyar looks up towards the bishop as if standing in awe. Below the sculpture sits a pretty man-made waterfall. The best place from which to view the statue is from the Elizabeth Bridge. However, if you want a closer look, you can climb up to the bronze likeness of Bishop Gellért via a flight of steps that originate at the bridge. The monument can be seen from all over Budapest, especially at night when it is illuminated.
