The Litahni Building on the Girl Scouts of DuPage County campground sustained major damage as a result of a fire on Tuesday, 10/25. The 130 acre wooded area is located in unincorporated DuPage County near Castaldo Park in Woodridge. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

What happened here?

After 30 years the landscape still shows the scars from the blast on Mt St Helens.

My desk is nearly always pretty tidy...except after a few friends have been around and the discussion moves to music and old photos which need scanning.

I didn't want to tell you during the series, but one of the small cubs (not one whose photo I posted) fell from a tree to his death....thank goodness children had already left the viewing deck and didn't see this. The mother bear tried to rouse him/her to no avail and finally took him by scruff of neck to a nearby wooded area and put branches over him. In the meantime the other three cubs stayed up in a tree. We returned the next evening at 5 and heard that the mother came back that morning and took the little cub's body deeper into the woods....the staff did not know whether she would bring the remaining three cubs back to this area or not....but she did, about an hour after we came.

We learned more about bear behavior from the staff.....that at times, mothers would come to the feeding area with fewer or no cubs (after having brought them previous days) so something had happened to them in the meanwhile...

This was the first time ever....that a cub had died right there, in the sanctuary. Other times, when they had fallen from a tree and been injured, sometimes not very badly; they stayed with their mother and all was well. If the injuries were more severe and the mothers couldn't deal with them, they were taken to a rehabilitation center by a staff member. Cubs falling from trees was a rare occurrence we were told.

Everyone was stunned when this happened to the cub....it felt to me like when we had a tragedy at the school where I had taught, and the counselors and we teachers talked to the students, were available for them.....this time, the roles were reversed....the staff talked to us, but they were shaken as well.

No need to comment, flickr friends....just wanted you to know........Pat

Flickr frustrates me with the way it changes photos. People seem to complain about its sharpening, but in this case it seems to have softened my shot.

NOTE: All of the photographs I post on Flickr are Copyrighted, if you need to use them in any way please send me a request by Flickr Mail.

Guess what it is, and how it ended up like this....

when i saw the petals and rice on the ground i grabbed my camera, then this guy appeared and started sweeping - I squealed "stop", and he stopped in his tracks, wondering what on earth he had done wrong... finally I think his feet and broom made the photo more interesting!

Day 333: Abandoned can on a window sill... one of those rushed shots... yet again!

Richmond Hill, Queens NY. Several trees and tree limbs litter the streets.

The river has receded and now people are surveying the damage. It's just devastating.

This is the pic released by ISPR. It shows the camp under the snow and the place from where the avalanche was initiated.

I couldn't fit the whole bag of birdseed into the cooler I keep it in. So I left the rest on the porch. And then went away for a few days. Whoops

Aftermath...

An accident occurred this evening. It's never good when it's a little kid. I hope this 11 year old girl will be fine, with no life long issues to speak of.

Tornado damage, I'm assuming.

We made a sparkler bomb with 480 sparklers I bought cheap last 5th of July.

This is what it looks like after it's done burning. It was still glowing quite brightly.
