The results of a grade crossing mishap awaiting repairs at the British Columbia Railway Squamish shops, August 19, 1995.
I took a wander round the corner to the site of a large warehouse fire which happened on 15th January. The whole warehouse area has collapsed in on itself and I find the rust and mis-shapen metal fascinating. I felt a little voyeuristic taking these shots, but everyone got out safely. I'm not sure I could have taken them had there been injuries

A shot of the old CGW bridge in Waterloo, IA (see previous shot) weeks after four of the eight spans were pushed off their piers in June of 2008. It took till Oct of 2009 to get funding and approval for the rebuilding. Amazingly, all the Plate Girders dumped in the river were reused. Heat straightening and I believe new floor beams were used. Three piers had to be demolished and rebuilt.
Me and El used to hang out up here all the time with the gang.

Hurricane Sandy is over. My unexpected mini-vacation is now at an end.
I'm spending the last day before I return to work in bed all day with my delicious Starbucks.
The commute is going to be difficult as all the trains I need are the ones most affected by Hurricane Sandy!

Rarely do "mirror self portraits", but was freezing, so I made an exception.
I just did a "mudrun" which basically consisted of getting up super early after not sleeping much, putting on an old high school track jersey, tiny tiny shorts, and water wings (sadly absent here, I popped one on the couse and took them off so the car didn't get too dirty). It was FREEZING, and about 1000 feet into the course, we had to ford a river. Great start...rest of the course was jumping over walls, slip and slide, hay bales, cargo nets, etc, finished by a MASSIVE mud pit you had to basically swim through to get under a bunch of flags.
Followed by one of the best showers, ever.
Happy Halloween all!
The aftermath of a large condo building fire. It was started because of improper disposal of a cigarette on a balcony. The result was devastating. All 106 homes destroyed and $16.3 million in damages. Thankfully, no humans were killed or seriously injured. I'm not sure about non-humans however (since media tends to not care about that)

”Operation Torchlight” was initiated by the NDC Peace Enforcers stationed in Romania and Serbia as an attempt to subdue the operational strength of the RNF (Romanian Nationalist Front) in the regions surrounding the Romanian-Serbian border. The main goal of the operation was to uncover and shut down the RNF’s weapon- and supply depots, thereby strangling their effective combat capability.
Searching towns and villages for suspicious activity was in most cases a tedious task for the NDC troops, and they usually found little or nothing of significance. This boring routine was abruptly broken when NDC mechanized infantry moved into the border town of Zresiça. The Peace Enforcers, who had expected to achieve little more than ticking off the locals yet again, suddenly discovered they had stepped right into a hornet’s nest. Caught off guard, the Enforcers were sitting ducks for the waiting RNF troops, and the first half of what became the "battle for Zresiça" was a scene of chaos. Not until reinforcements from the 72nd Rapid Response Battlegroup arrived, was the NDC Enforcers able to turn the tide of battle and finally push the RNF forces back.
In the aftermath of the battle, the Enforcers found several hidden armouries throughout the town, which apparently had been a major stronghold for the RNF. The NDC military intelligence agency received strong criticism for its reports that didn’t indicate any suspicious activity in this particular region, a mistake that claimed the lives of 18 Peace Enforcers. The battle for Zresiça is the fiercest and bloodiest encounter with the RNF the NDC Peace Enforcer Corps has had to date.
