JNUSU Election and the Struggle Against the Lyngdoh Recommendations ! .

Throughout the protracted struggle against Lyngdoh, AISA has played a leading role-whether it is mobilizing students, or public opinion, or funds. This struggle has been fought against all odds. The casteist and anti-democratic Youth for Equality (YFE) has openly defied JNU's cherished processes of democratic decision-making-they refused to participate in UGBMs, and instead routinely ran to the JNU administration and to the Supreme Court to scuttle campus democracy at every stage. .

SFI, which has a national position in favour of the Lyngdoh committee report, boycotted several ofJSC's initiatives -like the national convention for campus democracy and the Night Vigil in 2009. In 2010, SFlied an opportunist bandwagon of forces demanding that we should defy the SC stay order. Had this position not been defeated at a UGBM held in February 2010. our ongoing case against the Lyngdoh recommendations in the SC would have been severely weakened. The interim application submitted after the Feb 2010 UGBM accompanied by the negotiations with Amicus Curie became the basis for the 8 Dec 2011 SC order, paving the way for the present JNUSU elections. .

And over the past few months, we have also seen so called "democratic" and "radical" forces like DSU also undermining the platform of the UGBM by shamefully refusing to accept UGBM mandates. They are desperate to create a "more radical that thou"ELECTION AGENDA for themselves! In the process, DSU simply refused to acknowledge the adverse impact of a long-term suspension of JNUSU and elected student representation. .

Other organizations .

Where AISA has sought to articulate and fight for a radical, pro-student, pro-people vision of politics on this campus, there exist other student groups With political agendas quite removed from ours. .

Take the ABVP. Its activists have repeatedly engaged in acts of violence, lumpenism, and venomous communal campaigns. They have shown a complete absence ofconcern for genuine student issues. They have openly and .

wholeheartedly supported the Sangh Parivar's pogrom of terror. rape, and have tried to tum JNU into a laboratory for their hate campaigns against Muslims. .

YFE was born in the wake of OBC reservations with the single point agenda to spread casteist frenzy against social justice. Subsequently, with the implementation of OBC reservation, most of its cadres have returned to their original .

home of ABVP. But given its deeply reactionary character, YFE continues to invent one devious means or the other to scuttle EVERY democratic aspiration and institution of the JNU student community, be it UGBM or JNUSU election. .

The NSUI generally remains silent and absent, occasionally arousing itself to welcome Congress leaders or defend the UPA Government's assault on lives and livelihoods. .

On this campus and beyond, SFI has become a spokesperson for the politics of displacement and Akbar, President, AISA, JNU .

f\nrnnr~ti7~tinn ThQlf ~tnnrf hv thF! ~nministration in .

crackdowns on students, ran dubious campaigns against .

proper implementation of OBC reservation and reduced .

politics to one of slander and personalized attacks. .

We have seen this .

.

When they never worked to restore the deprivation points in JNU's admission, which stood scrapped during 1983-93, despite the fact that it was SFI which led JNUSUs for most of the terms during this period .

.

.

When they championed the opening of the Nestle outlet in this campus in 2004-05 and defended it till the last, .

.

.

When they betrayed the struggle for minimum wages in 2006-07 by demanding punitive action on protesting students and striking workers. .

.

.

In their total abstinence from the struggle for the correct implementation of OBC reservations and against the illegal cut-off criterion imposed by the JNU Administration, and .

By their silence on the recent moves of the government to further commercialize and privatize education. .

Like its parent party CPI(M), which has been driven out of power in West Bengal and Kerala as a result of Singur and Nandigram and steady compromises on the issues of the day, SFI too has no moral authority leftto talk about any substantial issues of politics and student Interests. As a result, most of their time is engaged in vitriolic, personalized slander against AISA and Its activists. In fact, far from confronting the right-wing and administrative assaults, It Is anti-AISAism which has become the sole plank of SFI's politics. 1 .

DSU, which supports the anarchist-militarist Maoist stream is only interested in empty 'radical' phrase-mongering and mindless targeting ofAI SA by hook or crook, desperate to prove itself 'more radical than thou'. .

It is indeed interesting, that both these so-called 'left' organistions-SFI and DSU-far from engag~g In or enriching any creative democratic politics, are .

obsessed with anti-AISA-ism in all theirstan.,es. Their .

hostile role against AI SA for years on the 'c.L. ~·-·f' stn-_-:;!e for proper implementation of OBC reservrtion is the one of tne most recent examples of their blind anti-AISA obsession. .

Challenges Ahead .

We are right now at a juncture when the elected JNUSU must ensure broader mobilisation against Lynqdoh recommendations and in defenceof campus democracy. For a long time, we have been demanding reduction of welghtaat of viva marks in JNU admission process. to stall the possibility of discrimination and subjective biases. Also ensyrlng hostel facilities. enhancement of MCM and other scholarships/ felloW§hlps. resisting fee hikes and commercialisation drives .

-several such struggles lay ahead. .

.

By resisting attacks, by Imagining new futures, and institutionalizing progressive changes, A/SA has evolviKJ and articulated aradical and creative vision of politics in JNU.It has playeda vanguard role in addressing the burning quedions ofour time. We need to build astrong, robust resistanc8t8assau~tm student rights and campus democracy; we needto defend the spirit ofJNUSU which is C001mittedto struggle for asecular, democratic, socially-inclusive and gender-sensitive JNU and society at large. .

On Wednesday, April 29th, 2015, Micheal Broski, a representative from West Point Academy visited Utica Academy of Science Charter School. Scholars in grades 7 through 10 were given a survey to indicate whether they are interested to hear from West Point Academy or not. There were 83 scholars who signed up for it. Mr. Broski had arrived to give information about the admission process of West Point and other programs are being offered at West Point Academy. West Point Academy’s role in our nation's history dates back to the Revolutionary War, when both sides realized the strategic importance of the commanding plateau on the west bank of the Hudson River. General George Washington considered West Point to be the most important strategic position in America. Washington personally selected Thaddeus Kosciuszko, one of the heroes of Saratoga, to design the fortifications for West Point in 1778, and Washington transferred his headquarters to West Point in 1779. Continental soldiers built forts, batteries and redoubts and extended a 150-ton iron chain across the Hudson to control river traffic. Fortress West Point was never captured by the British, despite Benedict Arnold's treason. West Point is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. Mr. Broski showed a video which was amazing to have students get an idea what they do at West Point. Students asked a lot of questions to Mr. Broski to learn more about it. Students answered some questions, they earned a USB drive, and several other prizes.

ungly condemns the physical ossa~Jif ~n Sumeet Kishore a YFE activist by Rajan Pandey a Joint Secretory 0~ , JNU Unit. This incident took place near-the admission assistance booth of Ad Block yesterday. Both Rajon and 1eet were standing at the bus slop to assist new students in their admission process. The incident started with on .

gument over assisting a new student when Sumeet was pushed by Rajan while trying to take her to the YFE's .dmission assistance booth. There was a heated exchange of words and some pushing around between them which was pacified by the other students present at the bus stop. The SAA councilor Ameet Pormeswaron along with some other students tried to take Rajan away from Sumeet to ensure that nothing untoward happens. However offer 5-10 minutes when it seemed that things had been resolved Rojan took a stone and hit Sumeet on his head without any kind of provocation. Rojan has been suspended from the university by the Proctor's Office and a Proctorial enquiry has been ordered into the incident. We believe that such violent acts are completely antithetical to the democratic culture of JNU. It is all the more shameful because the whole incident took place In front of new students and their parents. JNU is known for its progressive values and the entire exercise of admission assistance is also done in the same spirft where new students ore helped in their admission process. The new students who come from different places all across the country gel their first exposure to the political culture of JNU in the admission assistance " process. However the degeneration which has led to a situation where new students ore pounced upon with people fighting with each other and has culminated in this unfortunate incident has lowered the prestige of JNU in .

front of new students. .

In a most shameless manner the AISA has tried to defend Rajan's behaviour by making cock and bull stories about the incident. The services that we provide as addiction advisors help so many people that are in need of treatment. Given an addict’s already altered state of mind, it can be very difficult and confusing for them to understand how the admissions process works for rehabilitation.

Luckily for these individuals, we do all of the work for you so that you don’t have to. The convenience factor for that alone is completely worth making the call, let alone the fact that we have a large network of top-of-the-line treatment facilities all across the nation.

For example, if you’re in need of addiction treatment in Billerica, MA, we can find you the perfect drug and alcohol rehab within the Billerica surrounding areas.
