Michigan winters can be rough! So rough in fact that I contacted a bad case of CABIN FEVER. It was so bad that I went out and bought a small boat today. That boat currently sits in my living room.
Unfortunately, I discovered the boat's seats were horribly uncomfortable. So I placed one of those upholstered video game chairs in the middle.... it's so unbelievably comfortable that I've been sitting in it while I watch tv.
Yep, just me sitting in my boat, watching tv, waiting for spring to come.... Sometimes I feel like Richard Dreyfuss in that scene from Close Encounters where he's sculpting mashed potatoes to resemble Devil's Tower.
On a saner note: I've been kayaking for a number of years now and it's just not as comfortable as it used to be. So I needed a change. I've had my eye on this small boat for quite awhile. It's only 7' long, less than 4' wide and weighs only 55lbs. With the addition of the video game chair it's ultra comfortable.

257 Western Ave, St Johnsbury, VT
Built 1919, remodeled 1927, addition built 1942
Now the St. Johnsbury School:
"Vermont's first, and for many years only, four year vocational school opened on Western Avenue on September 3, 1918. Needing skilled workers during World War I, Fairbanks, Morse & Co. started an all-day co-operative school where your men could learn a skilled trade, earn money and obtain a high-school education. The original building, known as the Casino, was partially remodeled in 1919 and completely remodeled in 1927. The first out-of-town students arrived for vocational training in 1927. The "new" Trade School Building, built in 1942 on the site of Sir Thaddeus Fairbanks' estate, is currently the St. Johnsbury Middle School."

The hallway leading to our new master suite. It will have two doors (like an airlock -- this photo is taken inside the first door with the entrance to our new master closet on the right. The door at the end opens to our sitting room with the bedroom beon. This door will eventually be replaced by a stained wood interior door
Painting up the trim and walls in back addition. The dark ceiling is really low and I think it should be painted out to be white and bright

Slightly sweet and tangy cream cheese forms a tender base for these icebox cookies packed with three different hits of walnut: ground and diced forms in the batter itself and a maple-glazed walnut half as a quaint "hat". I added currants to half the batch, but they're just as delicious without.
Here it is! the latest arrival in our household! I've been so excited waiting for it to come. And so now I'm off to play. :)

It took 4 days to pressure wash, stain, and construct the addition. I couldn't have done the carpentry so fast without Sarah's help.
My latest purchase.

This "Sloped Glazed" storefront entrance addition was added to a Suwanee office building. Fingerprint ID system was installed with the doors for top level security required.
Sadly, my grandmother's old machine was sold a few years back. A little bit of a bummer but I went out and picked up a new one for a fresh start.
In addition to student exhibitions, performances, and demos throughout the building and exhibitions including Bunnybrains and Potency of Process, PNCA welcomed our Patrons and the Design Museum Portland for October's First Thursday. photos by Adam Simmons.
Weddell Seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) / After the encounter with the Humpback Whale in Charlotte Bay, we continue north to Mikkelsen Harbor (63°54′S 60°47′W) for a landing on D'Hainaut Island between 14:00 and 17:00. Mikkelsen Harbor is a small bay indenting the south side of Trinity Island in the Palmer Archipelago and D'Hainaut Island is a small island in Mikkelsen Harbor. It was charted by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, under Jean-Baptiste Charcot. The island is often snow covered until late in the season and there are a number of shallow reefs in the waters surrounding the island. Confirmed breeders: Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) snowy sheathbills (Chionis alba), skuas (Catharacta spp.), Dominican gulls (Larus dominicanus), and Antarctic terns (Sterna vittata). Weddell Seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) and Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) frequently haul out and crabeater seals (Lobodon carcinophagus) and leopard Seals (Hydrurga leptonyx) are regularly sighted in the vicinity. There is a small Argentine refuge on the island. In addition, there is a large pile of whalebones and a whalers’ water boat located on the northeast shore of the island
I'm all set on the outside for the vinyl siding and for the vinyl soffit but the siding guys didn't call back! Them bas"terds"! Oh well, screw them! I guess I'll do that myself too (and save a bunch of $$$$$$). It'll take me longer than it would have taken them but it'll be fun and I'll save an oodle of green.
NRCS Associate Chief Louis Aspey visited Oregon in June 2023 to meet with NRCS' National Water and Climate Center (NWCC) and NRCS Portland Data Collection Office (DCO) staff, both part of the Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting (SSWSF) Program. Cara McCarthy (NWCC Water and Climate Services Team Lead), Melissa Webb (NWCC Water and Climate Monitoring Team Lead), Sean Fleming (Portland DCO Supervisory Hydrologist) and Matt Warbritton (Portland DCO Hydrologist) visited the Mt. Hood Test Site SNOTEL (snow telemetry) site with Associate Chief Aspey to highlight the work of the SSWSF Program and its extensive mountain hydroclimatic monitoring network with more than 900 SNOTEL sites in the western U.S.
The NWCC is located in Portland along with the Portland Data Collection Office, which is part of NRCS Oregon. The NWCC and 12 western states including Alaska, administer the SSWSF program. The NWCC is primarily responsible for producing water supply forecasts and other hydroclimatic products, while state snow survey programs disseminate those products and data, in addition to maintaining the monitoring network. The Portland DCO’s operational area covers Oregon, Washington, and a part of northern CA, overseeing 156 SNOTEL sites and nearly 150 other monitoring stations. Standard SNOTEL sites have a snow pillow to measure snow water content, temperature sensor, precipitation gage, snow depth sensor, and a shelter to house equipment. Some sites have additional sensors for soil moisture, net radiation, wind, and relative humidity. Data from these sites are used in a variety of ways apart from water supply forecasts including for climate research, flood management, wildfire research and risk assessments, hydroelectric operations, ecological management, and more.
