Photo processed in True Tone HDR with Tone Mapping from 3 RAW exposures.

Unfortunately the photo has quite a lot of digital noise, because i did not have a tripod high enough, so i had to take all 3 exposures hand-held at high ISO. The HDR processing also tends to increase the noise. If i could have used a tripod to get low-ISO long exposures, this photo would have been outstanding. It's one the best photo of Deer cave that i have seen so-far.

A remote controlled helicopter with a remote controlled video camera was shooting aerial footage of Burning Man for a documentary.

The high-tech electrical RC Heli belongs to Copter Kids, a small company that specializes in shooting aerial footage from Remote Controlled helicopters, which is much cheaper than using a real helicopter and allows close shots and fast motions that cannot be done with full-size helicopters. Their equipment is fully customized and electrically powered, with for very low-noise operation. Their Heli can fly for about 8 min on a Lithium battery. One person pilots the Heli, and another person controls the camera, which broadcasts real-time video to a monitor on the ground.

Panorama of the Tehri dam (India)

Looks amazing in high resolution.

The Tehri dam is the highest dam in India and one of the highest in the world.

It is hard to imagine that right there, on this photo, deep under the lake, just at the bottom on the dam, there is a submerged city (Tehri, now called "Old Tehri") that was the provincial capital, with a population of about 25,000. The people from Old Tehri have been relocated to New Tehri, a planned city built on the mountain above the dam.

The Tehri Reservoir (the lake on the left) now fills-up a large part of the Bhagirathi valley, one of the headstreams of the Ganges.

The Tehri Dam was (and still is) a very controversial project, as it flooded two valleys resulting in the destruction of numerous villages and a town (Tehri), all now submerged, and forced the relocation of about 100,000 people.

For more photos and info about the controversial Tehri Hydro Power project, go to the Tehri Dam & Lake photo series.

Shiva Lingams Hindu Ceremony, at the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India).

View more photos of this ceremony.

If you know the name of this Hindu ceremony, please post a Comment!

This is a Hindu offering ceremony to Lord Shiva, performed by members of a large Ashram at the Kumbh Mela festival.

Thousands of Hindu devotees each made hundreds of small lingams with soft clay, each lingam having three small white eyes. Then they all walked in a procession from the Ashram toward the nearby Ganges river, carrying trays on their heads, with all the small clay lingams on the trays. All the lingams were then thrown in the Ganges river, as an offering to Lord Shiva.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

This is Lune (meaning "moon" in French), from an installation called "Lune and Tide".

The giant inflatable moon was hanging between two high metal masts on the playa for a day or so, then it disappeared. If you know what happened to it, please tell!

Word is that the original intent was for it to be inflated with helium and replicate the real full moon high in the sky. Apparently, there was a shortage of large supplies of helium this summer and they had to improvise to get this piece displayed. Looks like it didn't do too well in the wind in it's mooring.

Also I don't think that the contrast of the moon features was high enough. making it hard to see that this giant balloon was in fact the moon (I had not realized right away that that it was representing the moon, personally).

Laurence Symonds wrote:

This is Lune, from our piece Lune and Tide. It was indeed supposed to be filled with helium and anchored from below. Due to the global shortage of helium last summer, we had to improvise at the very last minute and decided to fill it with air and suspend it from above.

Unfortunately our improvised attachments at the top of the balloon weren't quite strong enough and the balloon ripped free on Tuesday afternoon in a particularly windy patch. About 10 people helped wrestle it to the ground before it could blow across the playa, taking out anything in between. Inside the outer printed balloon is another smaller balloon that has 400m of coloured LEDs. We had a control panel on the ground that was designed to have people be able to change the phase of the moon. Unfortunately we didn't have to opportunity to see it fully in action, but we are hoping to repair it and exhibit it at a burning man in the future

This is a photo of the total solar eclipse of March 9 2016, that I took in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The whitish hair-like structure around the sun is called the "corona", and it is formed by the hot gas particles (plasma) ejected by the sun into space (eventually forming the "solar wind").

I used a regular DSLR camera (Sony A65) with a 300mm telephoto. No filter needed since this was taken during the moment of "totality", when it is safe to look at the sun with the naked eyes.

During the totality, I took several photos with different exposure settings.

Initially I just processed this photo and this other one (both are single exposure).

Later, I processed all the good exposures I had to make an amazing image of this total solar eclipse.

Playa flies - see them in action!

Playaflies by Michael Brown and the Chinchilla camp.

Check my other photos of the Playa flies.

Playa flies are bicycle mounted color-morphing light sculptures. They are made of ping-pong balls attached to wires hanging from a flexible mast attached to a bicycle. The ping-pong balls contain color-morphing LED's similar to those used in the cubatron. There were a dozen bicycles equipped like that on the playa.

This is one of the 18 temporary pontoon bridges (i.e. floating bridges) installed during the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India).

This pontoon bridge is over the Ganges (Ganga) river. Those floating bridges are built on top of large empty metal tanks, and are anchored to the river bottom with ropes on the upstream side of the bridge. Those bridges can support trucks up to 10 Tons, but to be safe, the maximum weight was set to 5 Tons. Those bridges are mostly used for pedestrian traffic. During high affluence periods when large crowds are crossing the floating bridges, bridges are one-way, with alternating direction for each other bridge. This rule was taken after a stampede in a previous year caused the bridge railing to fail and many people to fall in the river and drawn (most of the Hindu pilgrims cannot swim!).

The water was very low in the Ganges river at the time, so in fact this bridge was not floating, but just sitting on the sandy bottom of the shallow river.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.
