A remote controlled helicopter with a remote controlled video camera was shooting aerial footage of Burning Man for a documentary.

The high-tech electrical RC Heli belongs to Copter Kids, a small company that specializes in shooting aerial footage from Remote Controlled helicopters, which is much cheaper than using a real helicopter and allows close shots and fast motions that cannot be done with full-size helicopters. Their equipment is fully customized and electrically powered, with for very low-noise operation. Their Heli can fly for about 8 min on a Lithium battery. One person pilots the Heli, and another person controls the camera, which broadcasts real-time video to a monitor on the ground.

Pontoon floating bridge over Ganges river, at the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India).

Looks amazing when viewed in high-resolution.

Hindu devotees are taking the ritual bath in the Ganges river, while a large crowd takes part in a procession with the all the Ashram Gurus on decorated floats, on the pontoon bridge.

This was the Kumbh Maha Snan or main bathing day, also called Mauni Amavasya, which is the the most auspicious day for taking the holy bath in the Ganges river.

This bridge is one of the 18 temporary pontoon bridges (i.e. floating bridges) installed during the Kumbh Mela.

This pontoon bridge is over the Ganges (Ganga) river. Those floating bridges are built on top of large empty metal tanks, and are anchored to the river bottom with ropes on the upstream side of the bridge. Those bridges can support trucks up to 10 Tons, but to be safe, the maximum weight was set to 5 Tons. Those bridges are mostly used for pedestrian traffic. During high affluence periods when large crowds are crossing the floating bridges, bridges are one-way, with alternating direction for each other bridge. This rule was taken after a stampede in a previous year caused the bridge railing to fail and many people to fall in the river and drawn (most of the Hindu pilgrims cannot swim!).

The water was very low in the Ganges river at the time, so in fact this bridge was not floating, but just sitting on the sandy bottom of the shallow river.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

For more photos and info about the Kumbh Mela festival, read the album description.

Hindu women bathing in the Ganges river at dawn, near the Sangam, during the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India)

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela.

This was the early morning of January 27 (a full-moon night, called Paush Purnima), one of the most auspicious mornings for taking the holy bath. After a 7 km night walk, I arrived at the Sangam area at about 3am, early enough to be well positioned to take a few good photos. The yellowish color is caused by the dim sodium-vapor street lights.

Duck blood (Vietnam)

This blood comes from ducks that were slaughtered and sold on a market. In the bowl on the left, it is still warm and not coagulated!

Blood soup (tiết canh) is made with raw blood of ducks or geese (sometimes pigs), with peanuts and herbs on top. This is the typical protein-rich breakfast of the country people in Northern Vietnam, but is very dangerous because of the H5N1 bird flu virus. The Vietnamese government is promoting public awareness about the risks, but try to explain bird flu to the country people...

This blog has more information on tiết canh.

This rail crossing structure is called a "frog" (in french, it's called "coeur de croisement"), and it looks amazingly like the burning man logo.

The abandoned Canfranc estation (train station) in the Pyrennees mountains in northern Spain.

It was the largest in europe when it was built, and it was supposed to become the main rail communication route between France and Spain.

But the Canfranc estation was almost NEVER used, it is abandoned and no-one knows what to do with it.

The train line on the french side (mostly tunnels and bridges) was never developed, and it is now totally abandoned after a bridge of the old single-track line collapsed in 1970. There is still a one-car diesel train that reaches the Canfranc estation once or twice a day from the spanish side.

Daryl's amazing railroad tattoo (San Francisco)

Train tracks, switches and tunnels cover his entire body, front and back, from head to toes (litterally), in a perfectly symetrical and seamless pattern. He designed the tattoo and said it took 200 hours of work to realise the work.

Daryl spent many years of his life "freight train hopping", which involves countless days of walking long miles along desert tracks.

Most tunnels in Daryl's tattoo bear his birth year (1957), but this one has the number 5150, which is the US police code for "Mentally disturbed person" :)

Playaflies by Michael Brown and the Chinchilla camp.

Check my other photos of the Playa flies.

Playa flies are bicycle mounted color-morphing light sculptures. They are made of ping-pong balls attached to wires hanging from a flexible mast attached to a bicycle. The ping-pong balls contain color-morphing LED's similar to those used in the cubatron. There were a dozen bicycles equipped like that on the playa.
