The Gangotri Ghats on the Bhagirathi river (India)
The Ghats are steps on the river side where Hindu pilgrims take they holy bath.
This was the early spring, so the river was still low. Later in the season, the warmer weather would melt the snow and ice of the glaciers and the water level would rise a lot.
Gangotri is an important Hindu pilgrimage destination on the Bhagirathi river, high in the Himalaya mountains. The Bhagirathi is one of the headstreams of the Ganges river.

Mondo Spider on its Trailer, ready to go home to Vancouver
This is a diesel-powered hydraulic mechanical spider. It weights about 1,600 lb.
De-Inventing The Wheel - This ridable mechanical walking machine was designed by a team of artists and engineers as an industrial metal beast destined to rock Burning Man and the world of kinetic sculpture. Inspired by Vancouver Junkyard Wars, this giant hydraulic monster was hewn from steel with passion and precision. Call it robot... call it biomimicry... call it what you will... We call it... The MONDO SPIDER.
It was originally shown at Burning Man 2006: Hope and Fear.

Steam locomotives in the Darjeeling Train Yard (India)
The two locomotives in the back (#788 "Tusker" and -#782 "Mountaineer") are warm and ready to work. One of them will be used to pull the next train, while a spare one is kept ready in case of last-minute problems with the main one. Because it takes hours to heat-up the steam boiler, the two steam engines must be warm and ready hours before the train is scheduled to leave. A railroad worker is staying up all night and feeding coal in their furnaces to keep both engines warm.
The locomotive in the front (#804 "Queen of the Hills") is undergoing maintenance. It will get new wheels.
View more photos of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Operations between Siliguri and Kurseong have been temporarily suspended since 2010 following a Landslide at Tindharia (view photos of the landslide).

Water Pollution - Environment - Mercury - New Idria
New Idria is a ghost town located in a remote area of the Coast Range of California (USA), outside the town of Hollister. It was once a center for mercury (quick silver) and asbestos mining. New Idria was at its peak well before the Gold Rush in California of the 1840's and 1860's. There are still high levels of mercury and asbestos polution in the area.
If you don't mind ignoring all the "no trespassing" signs, you can visit an amazing mercury smelter with four large "Gould" rotary furnances. This smelter was abandoned in the 1970's. All those photos were taken in May 2004.

Warzone? no, this is just the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations in Chinatown (San Francisco)
Each year, late on the night of the Chinese Lunar New Year, chaos erupts in the heart of Chinatown. An insane amount of very illegal firecrackers and fireworks are lit-up and detonated in the streets. The air fills-up with thick, rancid, toxic smoke. Sparks and rockets fly randomly in all directions. The local Police knows that they cannot stop the madness, so they prefer to stay away. Participants are highly advised to wear ear and eyes protection.
This unoficial event dubbed "Chinatown Bang" attracts local Chinese Americans as well as members of the San Francisco Cacophony Society. After running out of ammunitions, participants celebrate the Chinese lunar new year in local bars.

A huge crowd of naked Naga Babas heads towards the Ganges river at the Kumbh Mela 2013 Hindu festival near Allahabad (India).
Their bodies are covered in Vibhuti (Hindu sacred ash).
Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.
Thousands of Naga Sadhus (naked Hindu Holy men, with their bodies covered with wood ash) walk at dawn toward the bank of the Ganges river at the Sangam where they will take the Holy Dip. The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela. Also called Naga babas, those naked sadhus are wanderers with no possessions.
This was the morning of Vasant Panchami Snan day, an important religious date for Hindu people and one of the most auspicious mornings for taking the holy bath in the Ganges river.
