This area is called "La Plage".

Catacombs of Paris (off-limit area), about 20 meters (60 feet) underground, under Paris city center.

This is a part of the 200 Km network of ancient tunnels not opened to the public, but regularly visited by trespassing urban cavers called "cataphiles". See more information in the album description.

The lines that you see in the back are just the carbide lamps of a group of people going through while the camera shutter was opened. This is a long exposure shot (probably 3-5 minutes exposure). I went behind the pillars on the right and flashed several times from different places.

El Pulpo Mecanico art car.

The huge flame-throwing articulated metal octopus is built out of mostly scrap metal. The mechanical octopus was designed and created by artist Duane Flatmo and the spectacular fire effects and electrical systems were created by Steve Gellman.

Mazu, Goddess of the Empty Sea, is the Chinese patron goddess who protects seafarers, such as fishermen and sailors.

Procession of the Mazu crew, an all-Chinese camp with amazing art and a Brazilian drum marching band.

The members of the Mazu camp were all Chinese, mostly from Taiwan, with some coming from Hong Kong and Mainland China (PRC, aka People's Republic of China).

rusted rivets on rotary kiln - New Idria

New Idria is a ghost town located in a remote area of the Coast Range of California (USA), outside the town of Hollister. It was once a center for mercury (quick silver) and asbestos mining. New Idria was at its peak well before the Gold Rush in California of the 1840's and 1860's. There are still high levels of mercury and asbestos polution in the area.

If you don't mind ignoring all the "no trespassing" signs, you can visit an amazing mercury smelter with four large "Gould" rotary furnances. This smelter was abandoned in the 1970's. All those photos were taken in May 2004.

Old Soviet T-34 85 tank (probably captured from Egypt in the 6 Days war in 1976) converted into a kid's playground (Israel)

I climbed inside the tank, and it's "fun", you can manipulate the controls to turn the gun turret!

That's what I call "culture of war"...

Daryl's amazing railroad tattoo (San Francisco)

Train tracks, switches and tunnels cover his entire body, front and back, from head to toes (litterally), in a perfectly symetrical and seamless pattern. He designed the tattoo and said it took 200 hours of work to realise the work.

Daryl spent many years of his life "freight train hopping", which involves countless days of walking long miles along desert tracks.

On the left, Groucho Marx Art Car - Incognito Mobile

It is a representation of the floating head of Groucho Marx - The car's name is Incognito Mobile (NOT Mr. Potatohead!). Incognito was built by Kathleen and a team: Ericka (Sharpie). Trevor (Spankie Pie) (who were the primary master welders). Others involved: Tye (Uncle) , Sherri (Ivy), Arlon (light man extrodinaire), TJ, Kimberly (Harmony) and Lucy (Diamond).

Eroded rock formations that look like whipped cream, in Honey Valley between Göreme and Üçhisar in Cappadocia (Turkey)

The eroded rock formations of Cappadocia look like sandstone, but it is actually volcanic tuff, a type of rock consisting of consolidated volcanic ash that originated from ancient volcanic eruptions in the region.

Firefighter Woman with Bullhorn - Sara

When the Flaming Lotus Girls were lighting-up their giant Soma sculpture, the crowd was very quite, very silent (like in a church!). Sara popped up and shouted very loud with her bullhorn "Is that a Quite Zone?" - I found it hilarious and everyone cracked-up!
