My Labor Day hike at Graham Creek yesterday turned especially awesome as I spotted the first White Peacock butterfly I'd seen since 2015! It was only the third one ever, having seen my first back in 2013!

I briefly saw it as I began my hike to the sprawling field of Blazing Star wildflowers near the bog, but it fluttered away and I couldn't reconnect with it...I was thrilled to catch a glimpse, but bummed out at the thought of not getting a shot!

Several hours later, on the trail out, it reappeared and did circles around me for quite awhile, landing to puddle near me several times! I'm proud to add its beauty to my stream again after six years!

Adding another garden find, I saw this tiny <1 inch (2.5 cm), Praying mantis on a Swamp milkweed leaf. I also noticed its exoskeleton on a different leaf. The light at dusk was not conducive to any good shots however the following morning it was still hanging around and I found an angle that almost got both in the focal plane. This is hand held as there wasn't room for the tripod nearby.

Well truth be told, I don't have any fictitious figures lying around the house. I looked just about everywhere and nothing. My friend Helen is hosting the Macro Mondays group this week so I wanted to come up with something for the theme. I decided it was time to widen the search, my son Daniel happened to be home so it was time to see what he had. Well Daniel has all kinds of fictitious action figures that come as models and he assembles. Both my son's grew up in the war gaming world, my one son designs them for a living and Daniel enjoys putting them together. I chose Unicorn, a derivation of the original Gundam, a little warrior ready for battle. I'm good with that and that's the extent of my knowledge so please no questions. I will add you're looking at 1.5 inches from the tip of his helmet wing thing to the bottom of the red marking on the shield he's holding. Each old, unused barn tells a story to those who take the time to observe and listen. At some point a farmer went to the extra expense of adding on a better milk shed to this barn that had served him for a long time. Footings were dug, concrete poured and the small building was built to fulfill the farmer's plans for the future. Former farm sites now are littered with debris from old barns, sheds and houses and along with them, a lifestyle that served families and our country well.

Sometimes when you see an image of a structure it is quite hard to understand the immense size of certain structures or landscape features; the height of the Old Man of Storr surprised me when I took a hike there recently - the rock is huge. I like the way in which the figure here lends the 'Old Man' a bit of scale.

I had to use a long lens to get close to the action - I like the way this image looks.

My friend decided to burn his old broken tombak. I suggested using a flint for this. We doused the drum with lighter fluid and tried to light it with a fire starter. Well it didn’t work. As a result, we had to use a gas burner)
