This photo is of a food thermometer hanging out in a pot of oil, which is about to fry some ice cream coated in cornflakes. I can’t say how many times I’ve undercooked or burned something while trying to fry it due to a lack of correct temperature (which, for frying, is 350 degrees Fahrenheit). Thus, I’ve learned that a food thermometer is an absolutely integral part of anyone’s kitchen. I’ve also unfortunately learned that sometimes, guesswork isn’t the best way to cook.
I got a microplane in my stocking for Christmas. Most people don't know what a microplane is. And when they see it, it looks like a torture device. I begged for mine. After watching my dad in the kitchen, and countless Food Network chefs, I learned that sometimes, everyday utensils just don't cut it. You need specific tools for specific jobs. And now, grating parmesan cheese without one just isn't the same. Thus, I chose this photo because it made me think about all the techniques, tools, and ingredients that I had no idea existed until I actively started learning about cooking.
A few weeks ago, a few of my friends came to stay at my house in Cape Cod, Massachusetts for a while. One night, my dad asked them if they wanted to learn some cooking techniques. This photo is of my friend Emma learning how to peel and cut an onion. I included this photo because at one point, I went through the same exact experience. It’s truly fascinating how much you can learn about working in the kitchen, especially from someone who is so passionate about it. Plus, the way my Dad cuts onions, there’s no crying involved. Excellent.
