This is where I work. I spend more time here than at home so it deserves a slot in my photo a day.

Jonathan Perez, a graduate student from the University of California, Davis explains how they catch and take measurements on songbirds (like this tree sparrow) as part of an investigation into the effects a warming Arctic may have on migratory songbirds. This photo is of a food thermometer hanging out in a pot of oil, which is about to fry some ice cream coated in cornflakes. I can’t say how many times I’ve undercooked or burned something while trying to fry it due to a lack of correct temperature (which, for frying, is 350 degrees Fahrenheit). Thus, I’ve learned that a food thermometer is an absolutely integral part of anyone’s kitchen. I’ve also unfortunately learned that sometimes, guesswork isn’t the best way to cook.

A few weeks ago, a few of my friends came to stay at my house in Cape Cod, Massachusetts for a while. One night, my dad asked them if they wanted to learn some cooking techniques. This photo is of my friend Emma learning how to peel and cut an onion. I included this photo because at one point, I went through the same exact experience. It’s truly fascinating how much you can learn about working in the kitchen, especially from someone who is so passionate about it. Plus, the way my Dad cuts onions, there’s no crying involved. Excellent.
