This high school student is about the right age to have served during World War II with just such a weapon.
My teaching team: Soldiers and civilian workers combined forces to win the war. This exhibit was demonstrated at the high school alma mater of a Bataan Death March survivor, Tillman Rutledge, who recently passed. Tillman's surviving brother and sister were present as these students remembered his sacrifice and honored his memory by teaching students at this school about World War II.
The Collaborative Learning Studio in the Student Building at Indiana University features 16 six-student tables, each with its own monitor. The room is designed for team-based learning and other active learning approaches. Lecturing is tough in this room--there's no single spot with a clear line of sight to the entire room.
Students learn about World War II through a "hands-on" approach. Feeling the weight of helmets and gear gives a new appreciation for history and for the people who made it.

A visualisation of the great #OER14 paper by Rochelle Lockridge, Alan Levine, and Mariana Funes. They will be presenting their work at the UK conference in April.
Rochelle acted as the Patroness to an internal cohort of her 3M colleagues who can dedicate 15% of their work day to professional development in the form of structured serendipity. The patroness is the community connector between the corporate world and the open learning world of #DS106, using a pedagogy of scaffolding, active learning and experimental doodling bridging the open platforms and 3Ms internal tools. Alan Levine has been an integral architect in the building of these open platforms for DS106 and as well as Mariana Funes was an active participant in the headless iteration of DS106 in the fall of 2013.

Students are awarded bandanas for answering questions correctly and become new "Rosies" for the war effort.
Pretending a scowl, this student experiences the weight and feel of a rifle, cartridge belt, and helmet.

A high school student learns that a bayonet on the end of a rifle was not just for show. This hands on study goes beyond the book and helps the student appreciate the history better.
A high school student takes aim with a 1919A4 Browning Light Machine Gun (modified for display) and learns beyond the book about World War II.
High school students thumb through vintage magazines from World War II. They enjoy the ads as much as the stories and pictures.

My female teaching crew: "Wendy the Welder," WAC Lieutenant, Actress, Nurse, "Rosie the Riveter." These girls developed displays and characterizations to teach students at another high school about World War II. They had to study quite a bit to qualify for this job.
This may look like a pretty typical lecture-style classroom, but all that furninture is mobile. On wheels, even! It can be rearranged in a variety of ways, and take advantage of the many white boards and computer screens around the room. It's rare to see classrooms that have this much AV and are so flexible.
