The sidewalk is closed on account of masonry which fell off the Treasury Bldg during the earthquake a couple weeks prior ... of course, while all the other buildings in the city have long-since been structurally reviewed, repaired, and reopened; it's the federal buildings that still have need to close all the pedestrian facilities surrounding it.

Adding another consideration to image processing, I went back through recent images from the Chateau de Sceaux and used a blue filter to emulate 1800's emulsions. Even in the countryside where greens dominate a scene the blue filteration can have an interesting tonal shift that needs to be accounted for in setting the curves, contrast, and luminosity.

Considering B&W image processing in digital, I've learned a lot by reading Mike Johnson's The Online Photographer. I wrote about what I learned here.
The process is basically two steps.
1) Expose for the highlights and process for the shadows. This is the exact opposite of how I used to shoot film.
2) Open the shadows and smooth the highlights by taking the center of the Curve and raising it. It is essential.
Back in the film days we never stopped at negative processing. We printed to paper. This step, by the nature of the paper, opened the shadows and revealed the highlights when done properly. To get a similar effect in digital conversions to B&W I raise the mid-tones, which behaves like printing a B&W film negative.
Failure to do raise the mid-tones often leads to a muddy gray mess of an image. We often don't realize this until we compare the muddy mess against a Curves corrected image.
The Pentax 85mm f/2.2 Soft has been a very difficult lens to wrap a decent image making process around. The lens behaves in ways few do. I wrote a whole series on my explorations of this lens starting here.
Here's the setup I used - Sony NEX-7 full frame + Sigma 1.4x teleconverter + Pentax 85mm f/2.2 Soft shot very specifically at f/4.8.
I wrote about this combination and why I feel it "works" for landscape... except... I hadn't accounted for the way highlights glow and spill into the surrounding scene in high contrast situations. Perhaps some viewers might find this effect too strong for their liking.

The third annual report and accounts of the London Passenger Transport Board, to the year ending 30 June 1936, has the usual information as to the Board's activities and trading. It contains, as various of the Annual Reports did, photographs of the year's activities as well as maps of the Board's services such as Underground, tram and trolleybus, motor bus and coach services; however in this year it also includes colour endpapers that reproduce the series of four posters "The evolution of London 1800 - 1936" by Zéró, Hans Schleger. At the time Schleger, the German-Polish designer who had worked in his native Germany as well as the US, had been in the UK since 1932 and had been commissioned by London Transport for work that included the re-design of the Board's bus stop flags.
The posters, early examples of the 'pair posters' that LT would much use in the 1950s, take a map of the Metropolis in 1800, 1850, 1914 and 1936 showing the growth of the city, and corresponding snapshots of the various forms of public transport at those dates and their development. The maps show the boundary of the 1933 London Passenger Transport Board's area within which they had powers regarding many forms of road passenger transport.
