From the diary of Lucena Parsons, 1850:
August 18 – Started late on account of rain. Went nine miles over a new and hilly road, and came to the Mineral Creek which comes from a mineral spring up on the old road. We are on the river to find wood, grass and water, as there is none on the bluffs road at this time of year. Camped on the river, it still rains and the weather is very cold, the wind in the north. On the opposite bank are high mountains that look red. There is supposed to be iron ore and coal beds in abundance in this region. Saw ten Californians on the return. One of them came to our camp. The news very good from there.
August 19 – Still detained here on account of rain. It rained incessantly all last night and this morning. It looks very gloomy. When it stops for a few moments the mountains seem to smoke. There are camped near us the ten Californians. They have been there one year, made a fortune and glad to get back home. They say some 200 miles this side of there they found men without food eating their horses and mules. One young man, rather than eat his horse, plunged in the river and drowned himself. There are also with the Californians men from Fort Laramie in search of deserters this season. Still rains and as cold as winter.

Species Account: The red-eared slider is native to the Mississippi River drainages. A subspecies, the yellow-bellied slider (Trachemys scripta scripta), occurs naturally in north Florida. The red-eared slider is the little green turtle that has been sold by the hundreds of millions in dime stores and pet shops throughout the United States, and it is the most commonly exported reptile species, with over 52 million being exported from the United Stages from 1989 through 1997 (Franke and Telecky 2001). As a result, this adaptable species has become established in many areas of the world, including Europe and Japan, where they compete with native turtle species and prey upon fish (summarized by Franke and Telecky 2001). Reproducing populations are present in Florida, and they breed with yellow-bellied sliders in north Florida. Adults may reach a length of 30.5 cm (12 in). Mature males have elongate front claws and may be patternless and almost black colored. Hatchlings are green with numerous lighter and darker lines. The face and limbs are green with numerous yellow stripes, and a broad red stripe is present in the "ear" region. As they age, their color and pattern dulls (Bartlett and Bartlett 1999).

The book of Nehemiah is the remarkable account of how God used Nehemiah to restore God’s people to His purposes. In this opening section we see that Nehemiah enquires about the state of God’s people and the city of Jerusalem. When he hears that they are struggling he is deeply affected, but responds by going to God in prayer. His prayer is a remarkable example of faith in God’s character, personal contrition, alignment to God’s purposes, and request for favour. After months of planning and prayer, Nehemiah then approaches the king to ask him for permission to return and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Because of God’s gracious hand upon him, Nehemiah receives the king’s favour and leaves for Jerusalem.
This passage challenges us to think about what purpose our lives are being lived for. Nehemiah’s concern was for God’s people and purposes. His dependency was upon God rather than his own abilities. He was willing to sacrifice his life of comfort as a cupbearer in order to achieve something for God. Many people pursue greatness for themselves and lose their lives in the process. Nehemiah lost his life for the sake of God’s purposes and ended up accomplishing great things for God. Jesus Christ is the greatest of all who became a servant of all, and because of how He has served us, He has enabled us to serve others, and in the process do great things for God.

Several of my essays continue to be the top 20, including the article I wrote recently for the on-line edition of China Daily, earning CNY 200 for my troubles. (Reminds me: I should post a photo showing the e-deposit to my Chinese bank account.)
Also in the top 20: a picture of the payment I received when I sold rights to one of my Flickr photos to a publishing house in Singapore. The irony is, of course, that the photo I sold does not appear in the top 20. Oh well.
Since I last reported postings at 100,000 views in January, my photo of the world's greatest pizza and sub joint, Mort's Pub, moved from 13th to 8th spot. I am about to return to Ottawa for some summer shore leave, and I am craving a Medium Mort's Pizza and a Pint of Keith's Red. If you're in the neighbourhood in the next few weeks, be sure to drop in. You might see me! I'll be the guy in the corner wearing the People's Liberation Army T-shirt.

I'm starting the week getting rid of my personal account on Facebook, Twitter and my SIM card (I'm keeping the handset for clock alarm purposes). I understand that is closing the door to opportunities... yet, considering that the last two years have been rich in stress and unpaid work, I think I will survive. It also means I not longer have a way to bring my friends over here and pretend I take 'cool, interesting photos'. I may be back to my busy virtual life eventually but in the meantime, I got more time for playing with Annie, looking for a paid job, cooking...

This volume provides "A daily account of Public Labour performed by Crown Prisoners at Moreton Bay" in accordance with Governor Brisbane's instructions of 1824.
Under the main heading (as above) and the day and date, the volume is divided into sections under the sub-headings: No., Gangs, Employments, and Remarks
Details recorded under each sub-heading are as follows:
No.: the number of prisoners employed in each Gang, with the Total at the end of the list (lowest Total: 415; highest Total: 789). Gang: the type of occupation including Clerks, Overseers, Mechanics and Labourers, Splitters and Fencers, Agricultural Establishments, Camp Gang, Stock Keepers and Carters, Light Gang, Barrack Establishment, In Hospital.
Employments: where the labour was performed, how many were employed in each activity Remarks: each day this included the rations issued; other entries included thermometer readings, musters for inspection by the Superintendent and Divine Service, names of those who absconded, prisoners tried, names of those who died, schooner arrivals, new plantings and increases or decreases in stock
NOTE: This volume came to be known as "Spicer's Diary". Peter Spicer was Superintendent of Convicts from 23 August 1826 - 8 May 1839. J.B. Steele states that the register was "evidently maintained by Spicer's office clerk". However, the Commandant's Office has been chosen as the Creating Agency for this series because Governor Brisbane's 1824 instructions, and the 1829 regulations, gave the Commandant overall authority and responsibility for record-keeping and returns forwarded to Sydney.
