I switch now to the more concise account of Edmund Arrowsmith's final moments in the 17th century manuscript at Westminster Archdiocesan Archives ref. AAW A22/129:
“Coming to ye place of Execution he prayed most devoutly almost a quarter of an hour. For that interim ye head-Sheriff sent one privatly post to the Judge to know yet his pleasure, but all in vain. Then going towards ye Ladder he kneeled thrice saying ferverously at every time: I freely offer to thee sweet Jesus my life in satisfaction for my Sins... Then praying for the whole Realm & his Persecutors he forgave them & desired all catholics present (who were many) to pray with him and for him in this last conflict when he had most need. Then Parson Lee answered: there are no Catholics here. F Arrows. replied: I am ye more sorry, & wish I dyed as many Deaths as there are men on ye hill (which were almost innumerable) on condition they were all Catholics. Shall I pray for you, quoth the Parson. I desire not yr Prayers, said the other; neither will I pray wish you. So going up the Ladder & being on high he turned towards ye People, & with smiling Countenance exhorted all Catholics to constancy; while also exhorting the rest to ye Catholic faith. Praying a while after out of a written book, he pulled his Cap over his Eyes expecting Death. Then Parson Lee call'd on him, saying Sir, the King is yet merciful, if you will take the Oath, or be comformable. The Father put up his Cap again & somewhat hastily replyed: you are deceived in me. I am far from that in no case, in no condition. (I use his words.) Then with unda[u]nted resolution he zealously moved the audience to become members of ye true church as they tendered [to] their own Salvation, for that only is it, said he, as one day will most steed you. Some Ministers mutteringly interrupted him saying, we shall look to ourselves well enough. Others farther off cryed out: no more of that, no more of that & away with him. Then pulling his Cap over his Eyes ye 2nd & last time, in most fervent prayers to God, he was cast off the Ladder still praying as the moving of his Lips shewed whilst breath lasted.* He was suffered to hang till dead;** then cut down and quartered. This his happy end made many Protestants wish their Souls in no worse care than his was.”
*The 1737 tract has: “His Lips were seen to move, and BONE JESU, GOOD JESUS were the last Words, that immediately preceded his being thrown off the Ladder, and suffered to hang, till a happy Soul free from a mortal Body was admitted to the Crown of Justice”.
**The sentence of the court, according to the 18th century account, had been that “you shall be hanged by the Neck, till you be HALF dead; your Members shall be cut off before your Face...”. It then reports merely that “he was cut down, dismember'd, bowelled, quartered [etc]”. Was Edmund Arrowsmith “suffered to hang till dead”? The editors of the Victoria County History evidently believed so, stating -without, so far as I can see, any other authority for the proposition than the manuscript quoted above- that “by a special consideration he was allowed to hang till he was dead, before the rest of the sentence was carried out” (History of the County of Lancaster Vol 4, 1911).
Shown above is part of another 17th century account of the life and martyrdom of Edmund Arrowsmith, from Mathias Tanner's “Societas Jesu usque ad sanguinis et vitae profusionem militans...” which was first published in 1675. The title of the illustration top left gives the date of martyrdom, incorrectly, as 7 September 1628.
Executive Forum y Eurogestión han celebrado esta mañana Smart Ports, un encuentro de referencia para el sector portuario nacional que, por cuarto año consecutivo, ha congregado a los principales actores del sector de la logística y el transporte marítimos para poner en común los últimos desarrollos e innovaciones en el entorno de los puertos inteligentes.
Juan Manuel Martínez, director general de Eurogestión y vicepresidente de la Asociación Española del Transporte, ha presentado el evento e introducido a los asistentes. A continuación, el jefe del Área de Innovación de Puertos del Estado, José Llorca, ha inaugurado la jornada explicando el Fondo ‘Puertos 4.0’ en el marco de las políticas públicas de innovación orientadas por misiones.
Proyectos con autoridades portuarias
Patxi Sarasola, Account Manager en OSIsoft España, ha participado en el primer bloque temático de Smart Ports 2020 para presentar el software que desarrolla la compañía para conectar sistemas operacionales, datos y personas. De este modo, OSisoft ofrece una infraestructura de datos abierta para operaciones críticas, que conecta en tiempo real los datos operacionales con las personas y otros sistemas corporativos de negocio (como ERP, Business Intelligence y plataformas de analítica avanzada). “A día de hoy, tras cuarenta años de historia, nuestro software maneja más de 2 billones de flujos de datos operacionales en más de 21.000 ubicaciones por todo el mundo” ha destacado Sarasola. Estos datos son almacenados, contextualizados y enriquecidos para obtener una información operacional y de negocio que permita a las autoridades portuarias y a las terminales/operadoras optimizar y transformar su actividad en aspectos como la eficiencia de sus operaciones, la gestión de su consumo de energía, el mantenimiento inteligente de los activos portuarios o el cumplimiento regulatorio de emisiones, entre otros. En esta línea, Sarasola también ha presentado algunos casos reales de éxito, con retornos tangibles a nivel de negocio, en proyectos con Adani Ports, Port of Los Angeles y con la Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia.
En representación de Portel Logistic Technologies, su Business Development Manager, Pedro García, ha recordado que la compañía cumple actualmente “25 años al servicio de la comunidad marítimo-portuaria, ofreciendo soluciones tecnológicas a los distintos actores que intervienen en las operaciones y servicios que se prestan dentro del entorno portuario y del transporte, en general”. Para ello, Portel se basa principalmente en su plataforma E-Services, que permite y gestiona el intercambio de información entre estos actores, pero también en la implementación de soluciones enfocadas a mejorar la operativa y la gestión portuaria integral. García ha explicado también la experiencia de la participación de Portel en el Proyecto AIRIS para la digitalización del río Guadalquivir, una iniciativa que está siendo cofinanciado mediante el programa CEF Transport de la Comisión Europea. En el desarrollo de este proyecto, se está poniendo en valor esta información para la optimización de las operaciones relacionadas con la navegación y la mejora de la coordinación de servicios portuarios clave, como los servicios técnicos náuticos y de intermodalidad, gracias a la aplicación de tecnologías disruptivas como IoT y la sensorización inteligente.
Datos y blockchain
El responsable de negocio de puertos de T-Systems Iberia, Juan Altés, ha participado también en Smart Ports 2020 manifestado que “los avances en transformación digital del entorno portuario nos exigen la creación de espacios de colaboración confiables en los que toda la comunidad portuaria y sus usuarios puedan intercambiar datos, garantizando la interoperabilidad, seguridad y trazabilidad distribuida, y la confidencialidad de la información”. Según Altés, estos espacios deberían permitir incorporar la información como un valor añadido para toda la cadena logística, así como posibilitar la aplicación de soluciones de inteligencia artificial para “exprimir al máximo el valor de los datos en beneficio de todos”. En este sentido, ha considerado que el gran reto para los puertos inteligentes consiste en logar un avance tecnológico que vaya acompañado de un marco regulador adecuado y, también, de una visión estratégica sobre cómo compartir estos datos, “planteándolo como un intercambio de mutuo beneficio”.
José Pedro Inestal, director de Operaciones en Vetasi, se ha referido al uso de la tecnología para mejorar la eficiencia de las instalaciones portuarias. Esta compañía opera como Business Partner experto en Soluciones IBM, prestando servicios de soporte técnico y evolutivo para implementar soluciones adaptadas a entornos específicos, como es el caso de los puertos. En este caso, ha presentado las herramientas de IBM enfocadas a incrementar la eficiencia y operación de las instalaciones, mejorando los trámites portuarios y las operaciones del transporte marítimo. Entre ellas, Inestal ha explicado la apuesta de la compañía por la tecnología blockchain, ya que permite agilizar los trámites a la hora de tomar decisiones en la planificación y seguimiento de los cargamentos marítimos, reduciendo significativamente los tiempos de tramitación. También ha mencionado la plataforma IBM MAXIMO con la que es posible optimizar el mantenimiento utilizando inteligencia artificial, BigData e IoT para reducir las incidencias e indisponibilidades de las instalaciones.
Al finalizar los dos bloques de ponencias, con sus respectivas mesas redondas y debates, Juan Manuel Martínez ha despedido Smart Ports 2020 hasta su próxima edición el año que viene. En relación a la evolución del evento, Martínez ha resaltado: “hemos presenciado que, tanto el nivel de los contenidos como el número de asistentes, continúa subiendo edición tras edición”. En este sentido, también ha elogiado la “excelente” participación de los ponentes y los asistentes en las dos sesiones de debate, destacando que “el contenido técnico y las propuestas que se han puesto sobre la mesa, una vez más, han superado todas nuestras expectativas, por lo que esperamos seguir avanzando en el impulso y el desarrollo de los puertos inteligentes en las próximas ediciones de Smart Ports”.

The Lienzo de Quauhquechollan was painted by a group of Mesoamerican Indians from the region of Quauhquechollan. The Quauhquecholteca spoke Nahuatl, the language of the Mexica (Aztecs). The highly skilled artists who painted lienzos were called tlacuiloque in Nahuatl.
It is considered the first map of Guatemala.
It is the only firsthand indigenous account of the conquest of Guatemala.
It supplies new details on the conquest of Guatemala, such as the routes taken, individual battles engaged, war tactics, specific towns conquered, and costume.
It corrects the record.
a. History books traditionally attribute the conquest of Guatemala to the Spanish captain Pedro de Alvarado. Although Pedro had tried to conquer Guatemala in 1524, he abandoned the effort to return to Spain to defend his interests before the royal court. The Lienzo tells us that it was really his brother, Jorge de Alvarado, who headed the Spanish army in the campaign that ended in the conquest of Guatemala, from 1527 to 1530.
b. The role traditionally attributed to indigenous allies in the conquest of Guatemala has been one of support and subservience: foot soldiers, porters, and service providers. The Lienzo de Quauhquechollan describes a very different relationship, placing the Quauhquecholteca on a par with the Spanish as captains and frontline protagonists.
Prior to the arrival of the Spanish (1519), Quauhquechollan had been the scene of intermittent warfare, until it was finally subdued by the Mexica Empire. Its incorporation into the Mexica Empire meant a loss of wealth and status for the local nobility.
When the lords of Quauhquechollan formed an alliance with the Spanish in 1520, they were looking for the opportunity for advancement. It was a chance to achieve two goals:
to improve their social and political situation in the region through an alliance with a successful army
to be rid of the oppression of the hated Mexica (whose capital of Tenochtitlan is present-day Mexico City)

it was about the 20s of the last century, there were no computers, no spreadsheets, or anything like that, everything was done in writing, in huge hardback books, written with pen, ink and a beautiful handwriting, so when i find this specimen almost a century later, it was like finding a treasure, a time capsule of the time of our grandparents, when everything was done conscientiously and with exquisite care for the detail
