This hauntingly minimal photograph captures a layered, abstract architectural scene from an exhibit inside MAAT Lisbon. Weathered concrete panels, exposed studs, and sections of plywood form a quiet composition that blurs the line between construction and deconstruction. Warm wood tones contrast starkly against cool slate grays, evoking the rhythm of geometry and decay. It’s a meditation on negative space, urban erosion, and the poetics of unfinished environments. The piece compels viewers to question what is being built—or what has been left behind. Displayed with reverent simplicity at MAAT, this work invites introspection through the language of line, shadow, and raw material.
Rows of sharply angled louvers cascade down the façade like synchronized origami sails, turning an ordinary office block into a kinetic sculpture of light and shadow. The late-afternoon sun carves deep diagonal stripes across the concrete, while a lone classical cornice intrudes on the left-an architectural photobomb that highlights the dialogue between old ornament and modern rigor.

The Felix Nussbaum Museum is an extension to the Cultural History Museum in Osnabrück and is dedicated to the work of Felix Nussbaum, the Jewish artist born in Osnabrück in 1904. The Museum displays Nussbaum’s graphics and paintings done prior to his extermination in Auschwitz, and houses a temporary exhibition space focusing on the themes of racism and intolerance. The building was completed in the summer of 1998, in collaboration with Reinders & Partner Lange, and has already attracted more than 4 million visitors.
The building consists of three main components: the tall and narrow central Nussbaum corridor, the long main section, and the bridge, which acts as a connection to the old museum. In its pathways with their sudden breaks, unpredictable intersections and dead ends, the building structure reflects the life of Felix Nussbaum.
