View of Bélvès, a picturesque village situated on a ridge overlooking the Nauze Valley in the Périgord Noir region of the Dordogne department, France, provides stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Bélvès is officially classified as one of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France" (The Most Beautiful Villages of France), a designation awarded to villages that excel in heritage, charm, and beauty, and Bélvès certainly meets these criteria..

Pays de Belves: Urban Photography

The history of Bélvès dates back to approximately 300 BC, when a Celtic tribe, presumably the Bellovaci, settled at this strategic location. The village thus boasts a history spanning 2,300 years. The Romans were the first to establish a military base there due to its strategic location. Later, in the Middle Ages, Bélvès grew into a fortified town with seven towers, earning it the nickname "the town of the seven towers." During the Hundred Years' War, the village was often on the front lines and experienced periods of destruction and recovery. The current market hall and many other historic buildings date back to the 15th century. A walk through the historic Castrum district reveals that much from that era has been preserved..

De Groene Poort in Vichte is one of Belgium's premier showrooms for antique building materials and reclaimed furniture. Housed in a vast warehouse, this "treasure hunt" destination offers everything from thousands of historic doors and custom-made salvaged wood tables to industrial decor and architectural salvage, making it an essential hub for designers and homeowners seeking authentic, one-of-a-kind character.

De Groene Poort (The Green Gate) in Vichte is a renowned destination for anyone looking to add a touch of history and character to their home. It is widely considered one of Belgium's largest and most unique showrooms for antique building materials and authentic furniture.

The store is housed in an expansive warehouse and is famous for its "organized chaos" charm. It feels more like a museum or a treasure hunt than a traditional furniture store. They specialize in: thousands of antique doors, reclaimed wood furniture, industrial and vintage decor, architectural salvage like old shutters, vintage windows, stone sinks, and hardware for restoration projects and much more.

It is a primary source for interior designers, architects, and homeowners who want to move away from mass-produced furniture. Whether you are looking for a massive oak dining table made from reclaimed barn wood or a specific vintage handle for a renovation, this is the place to go.

Steam engines - very impressive!. Many historic steam engines, impressive, large and hissing, and beautifully lit in the evening. Not only were they parked somewhere but they also drove around the old city center which got a lot of attention from the public. The sound of the steam whistles has long been the typical sound for another summer edition of the Vestingdagen event.

Capture of Brielle - Procession

April 1st, 1572 - the capture of Brielle by the Watergeuzen. A turning point in the uprising of the Low Countries against Spain in the Eighty Years' War. Militarily the success was minor as the port of Brielle was poorly defended by the Spanish, but it provided the first foothold on land for the rebels at a time when the rebellion was all but crushed, and it offered the sign for a new revolt throughout the Netherlands which led to the formation of the Dutch Republic.

The Watergeuzen were led by William van der Marck, Lord of Lumey, and by two of his captains, Willem Bloys van Treslong and Lenaert Jansz de Graeff. After they were expelled from England by Elizabeth I, they needed a place to shelter their 25 ships. As they sailed towards Brielle, they were surprised to find out that the Spanish garrison led by the Spanish "Iron" Duke of Alva protagonists was poorly defended. On the evening of April 1 in 1572, the 600 men sacked the port, rammed the city gates, defeated the Spanish soldiers and liberated Brielle as the first Dutch city in the Netherlands from de Spanish .

Nowadays a very popular annual UNESCO event with lots of Watergeuzen, Spanish soldiers and medieval dressed people in a city center all dressed up just like then on that historical day.

Cassis Château "The Castrum" - a fortified enclosure built in the 13th and 14th centuries, no doubt on top of the remains of an earlier building dating from the 8th century.

The Castrum belonged to the powerful Baux family from 1232 onwards. They also owned the barony of Aubagne and the seigneury of Roquefort.

It was inside this "Castrum" that the mediaeval Cassis developed, seeking to protect itself from the barbarian invasions and brigands.

At the end of the 15th century, this fortress housed more than 250 people. Today a privately owned property and a luxury guest house.

Hellevoetsluis: Kerstboomverbranding - Event Photography

The traditional Christmas tree burning is an annual event that takes place the week after Epiphany. According to tradition, January 6 is the date on which the Christmas tree is taken down. Then it is Epiphany, the day on which, according to the Bible, the three Magi from the East arrived in Bethlehem. This holiday symbolizes the end of the Christmas celebration. The Christmas tree burning event is then organized by the municipality, ensures that the trees are collected and plans an evening often attended by many spectators. The event is often enhanced by music and there are stalls selling snacks and drinks. A festive tradition with a warm welcome for the new year.

Perhaps the most special view of the Kleine Geul, but probably also the most photographed woman in Valkenburg. It is a bronze nude sculpture by an unknown artist on a footbridge over the Kleine Geul river. She leans relaxed over the railing of the bridge, aided in height by a champagne cooler as a plinth. A beautiful classic hairstyle above a young face, the somewhat large breasts concealed in the relaxed arms, the back provocatively high in the air on stately slender legs.

Hearthstone dutch stadtholder William III, Prince of Orange, later King William III. He left the port of Hellevoetsluis in 1688 with a huge invasion fleet of 463 ships and an army of 40.000 soldiers to overtake King James II of England. It was to become the "Glorieuze Overtocht", the "Glorious Crossing".

Prinsenhuis

Prinsenhuis (Est 1664, monument) - built in the mid-seventeenth century as a home for the "commies", an official, and lodging of the Committed Councils of the States of Holland and West Friesland who supervised Hellevoetsluis on behalf of the Committed Councils of Holland charged with the supervision, construction, maintenance and operation of the port and Fortress and collecting taxes. With building included living- and guest rooms on the first floor, and a meeting room, kitchen and pantry on the ground floor.

From 1963 to 1966, with the support of funds from the flood disaster (Watersnoodramp), the restoration was carried out to bring this Admiralty building back to its original 17th-century Dutch Classical style. The layout and interior have also been adapted, such as a new council chamber on the first floor and many original decorations have been restored. Today we see a stylish facade of bricks with the original 17th-century cross frames and a stately landing. With on either side the outbuildings such as the 'De Ruyterhuis' and 'Het Kleine Kerkje', formerly warehouses and rifle storage and workshops, this as a whole gives a stately and appropriate historical appearance.

The monumental building is still in use by the municipality, with the main public role being the use of the council chamber as a wedding hall.

Limeuil - Architecture

The village of Limeuil, located at the confluence of the Dordogne and Vézère rivers historically both commercially and strategically on the highways of trade. This region was primarily a wine-producing area for subsequent delivery downstream to Bordeaux, on large, flat-bottomed "gabarres". Nowadays a very nice historical village and on the list of the "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France", the most beautiful villages of France.

Geschut 24 IJ (Est.1870) kanon.

.

Don't shoot! - on the ramparts of Hellevoetsluis you can find the "Geschut 24 IJ" (Est.1870) canon, this type was the first large-caliber rear loading gun in the armament of the Dutch artillery. At the time there were 13 canons of this type of artillery at the fortress of Hellevoetsluis, as far as we know never used for actual defensive action. In the "National Military Museum" (NMM) in Soest is also a pristine example on display but without the fortress view.

Some details: the firing tube is 4560 mm long and the largest diameter at the height of the chamber piece (the thickest part) is 990 mm. Total weight of the entire construction is 22,710 kg, projectile velocity 380m p/s, range 3,000m, one shot every 4 minutes.

Sarlat-la-Caneda - One of the most prominent villages in the Dordogne region is Sarlat-la-Canéda. A very popular destination in the Périgord Noir, maybe because modern history has largely passed it by. Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. The old centre consists of impeccably restored stone buildings, with 77 protected monuments it's on France's tentative list for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Largely car-free with lots of narrow ancient streets and small stores, an absolute pleasure to walk through and to discover.
